Timing belt / water pump; how much $ to expect from stealership

Ill have to check my notes but I think my local dealership quoted me ~$350 for the job.

The labor rates will probably differ slightly based on where you live, but I went to the dealership and 3 different shops around here (Arlington, VA) and the cheapest quote I got was about $1,200 for parts and labor (for everything, not just the belt and water pump).
I ended up doing it myself and spent $350 on OEM parts alone (timing belt, water pump, water pump seal, thermostat, drive belts, timing belt tensioner, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, camshaft seals, and crankshaft seal). You may or may not need all of those parts but I went ahead and did everything since I am nearing the 200K milestone.

that's less than a dealership would charge only for parts.

There are vendors on eBay that sell complete oem kits for the timing belt maintenance that includes everything you need for the install (minus fluids). AirCabinMan sells the best kit at $350 with free shipping and he has great customer service.

The dealership will probably charge you 3 hours labor, even though it only takes a couple hours. They go off what their computer tells them. So you can probably gather that with parts that you paid $350 for (tax free!) and the labor that will run you around another $350-$450 (not including tax) you'll be looking at close to $800-$900 by the time it's all said and done.

X2. I got the same kit from AirCabinMan and have nothing but good things to say about him and the kit.
If you aren't doing the labor yourself, I would recommend buying the OEM parts yourself and taking them to a reputable mechanic and have them installed. It will probably save you a little money and you will know that you are using OEM parts. Just my $0.02.

Hey...a service advisor from a Toyota "stealership" here...you'd start off at $499 for just the belt- water pump, seals, tensioners and such would add considerable $

You don't? Hmmm. I guess I just thought you did. I couldn't tell you the last time I paid for any labor at the dealership. My 2 tech buddies usually write off labor and I just pay for discounted parts/fluids lol.

See that's what I thought but like I said the last time I remember paying for tax on a ticket had parts and labor on it. So, would you still pay tax on the subtotal if it's ONLY labor or the only time you tax the subtotal is when their are parts included? Sounds like a way for shops to make more money because 99 times out of 100 a service will include parts.

Its been a while since i called so my memory might be a bit fuzzy but I just called my dealership and the quoted me $328 for the timing belt and $245 for the water pump.

My local dealership quoted me $1,050 all said and done.
This is why I chose to do it all by myself...
But I also wanted to replace most of the components in there, which is why I was quoted so high.

Thanks for all the replies. I read them and then called a local dealer that has a good reputation. Cost is going to be $772.56 out the door. This includes a new water pump/belts antifreeze top off and timing belt.
They also provide a FREE loaner car. Dropping the T4R off tonight and it should be ready tomorrow afternoon. The loaner does make the logistics of getting a ride to and from the dealer less of a headache with our busy schedules and dealing with kids.

Thats actually a pretty good deal. I would want about that much to do it for someone. We just did my buddys timing belt in about 3 hours the other night. Im about to mine this week. Its actually not to tough if you have basic mechanic skills.
