Timing belt / water pump; how much $ to expect from stealership

Local dealer here in the Atlanta metro had a special through June. Buddy has his done w/serpentine belts for 525-550. The next dealer 5 miles or so down the rd quoted him double. I know timing belt, pump and belts were done, not sure if pulley was done and certain the tensioner was not done.

Helped a neighbor do his lexus and I think the kit cost him 300 or less (orielly's kit w/new tensioner, japanese bearings). Worst part was getting the crank pulley nut off, outside of that it wasn't a tough job. Belts are marked to ensure cams are lined up.

Thanks for all the replies. I read them and then called a local dealer that has a good reputation. Cost is going to be $772.56 out the door. This includes a new water pump/belts antifreeze top off and timing belt.

They also provide a FREE loaner car. Dropping the T4R off tonight and it should be ready tomorrow afternoon. The loaner does make the logistics of getting a ride to and from the dealer less of a headache with our busy schedules and dealing with kids.

We have a '97 too, and when that needs to get done I will go for it. I just could not spare the time right now for my wife's 2001. We are having a busy summer.

There are vendors on eBay that sell complete oem kits for the timing belt maintenance that includes everything you need for the install (minus fluids). AirCabinMan sells the best kit at $350 with free shipping and he has great customer service.

I did some searching on Ebay and found that same kit you linked above for $339.50(free shipping) from jdmpartsman714, same seller has a kit for $279 with the only difference I can see being non factory belts. I have not purchased a kit yet so I can not comment on the service.

I would not recommend changing out the crankshaft or camshaft seals unless they are leaking because I have read that replacing them prematurely can actually cause them to leak. When I did my timing belt job mine weren't leaking so I just left them alone.

If your kit comes with a new tensioner, you should definitely replace it. If you don't replace it, you will need a tensioner tool to compress the tensioner and pin it to complete the job.

I changed all of those. And with the hydraulic tensioner, you either get the tool that compresses it, or you install an entirely new one,(with a 1/4" swivel socket) and leave in the pin until your done with the job. i would just buy a new one. I got a new tensioner around the same price as the tool, and it made more sense to just have a brand new part in there, instead of an old one, and a tool that I will never use again. (The reason I got the hydraulic tensioner for cheaper is because I did the OEM Toyota Brand TB Kit on eBay.)

All of the other vehicles in my house have "hex keys/allen wrenches" to bring down the tensioner. It's pretty awesome actually.
