I just bought my '92 4runner. It has 175k miles on the chassis and 90k on the factory recalled engine. After how many miles do you need to change the timing belt, and how much does it cost. This truck runs really nice, and I want to keep it in top condition. But at the same time I don't have much money. Thanks!

Ive owned a total of 5 toyotas. Still own a 92 4r, a 99 Camry and an 02 Solara. Its been my experience that the internal belt begins to become unreliable after about 70 to 80 K miles. If it were my 4r,, id replace the belt now. If you have a V-6 and the belt breaks or jumps,, you probably wont damage any internals. However, if its a 4-Cylinder, you may likely bend the valves . Others in this forum may have more accurate advice, but I just don;t like to be stranded. It might be a good time to also check and replace the external belts and hoses.

Find out if the timing belt and both idlers were replaced under the headgasket recall because usually many Toyota dealerships will replace them and only bill you for parts not labour.If the timing belt was not replaced,the link below shows you how:

You should replace it to be safe. The cost isn't too bad but you never know what the condition is inside. When they did mine one of the idler pullies was rough so they replaced it. I have over 380,000km on mine and never any problem, but better to be safe then sorry. They say it is a non-interference head, but the tow bill will be almost as much as it costs to replace the belt. I originallt had a 1972 crown that wasn't done right and it blew the motor, not worth wasting time on it, just do it. I have had 6 toyotas now and they are bullit proof as long as they are maintained they will last forever (or till the doors fall off).
