Timing belt

I have a 2000 4Runner, 3.4 that turned 80k not too long ago. We don't drive much. The book says the timing belt should be replaced at 80k. I've read that many people say to go longer. This is the original belt and I'm wondering if I should replace it now because it's 16 years old. So is everything else for that matter (except plugs).

eBay sells all sorts of timing belt kits- some more complete than others. Other than the obvious, what components should be replaced at this point?

In Japan the Surf's(4Runner) have a Sticker on the Timing cover that lists it is recommended to change at 100,000Km (62,137Miles) there are plenty of people that go past that and some that go WAY past that, so it all depends on how comfortable you feel going beyond the manufacture's recommended service range.

The kit I ordered was from Amazon and came with All Belts/Tensioner/Water Pump and Thermostat. It has been running without issues for over a year and still looks and sounds great.

That is my 2 Yen worth :)

Just did one yesterday. Stock belt had 235,000 miles in it.

Anothe buddy did his with 200,000 on the stock belt.

You can go longer, but it is not recommend. The

Make sure you buy a kit with stock parts or the manufacturer of the stock parts. Mine including the two mentioned above were eBay/Amazon kits.

I just took off a belt with more than 150,000kms on it. The belt looked completely fine. Zero signs of wear. All pulleys including water pump spin with resistance. No free spins. As long as the parts are OEM's they will last a long time.
 
At that age it isn't so much worry that the belt will break (which they have) but how far it has stretched (maxed out the tensioner perhaps).

Change it sooner rather than later. OEM parts or Aisin kits work best.
 
Is there any way to tell if the timing chain has been replaced? I bought a 4th gen with 137k and I don't have the service record history. What happens when it breaks?
 
Mileage AND time are both wear factors for a timing belt. If you are comfortable leaving it until the WP leaks, that's up to you. Know that when the timing belt breaks, you will have no power steering or power brakes. This could be dangerous on the freeway.
 
Yea, I'm more worried about time than mileage. The car runs fine, no water pump leaks or anything obvious. All the hoses and belts are also 16 years old. Sounds like i should leave the timing belt, but maybe I should replace the hoses and other belts.

do it all. you have to remove these items to get to the timing belt. why remove them twice?
 
Are there any signs of your timing belt going? Same noises that other belts make when they go bad? Mine has 167k and the belt has not been changed yet. I'm just waiting for the disposable income to get the job done.
 
My 99 broke at about 120,000 miles. I got about a 10 second warning from odd noises then it popped. Had it towed to my mechanic, he did the service and I picked it up a few days later.
 
I just ordered the AISIN kit that includes belt, water pump etc an I'm getting ready to do this job this weekend. Curious though if your mechanic recommend replacing the water pump and thermostat? Seems everyone is recommending these since you already have everything taken apart anyway.
 
Ya if your budget allows it definitely replace the water pump and thermostat as well. You only want to be in there once.
