Timing belt

Are there any signs of your timing belt going? Same noises that other belts make when they go bad? Mine has 167k and the belt has not been changed yet. I'm just waiting for the disposable income to get the job done.

No, usually you can't tell how much longer you have on a timing belt except for the tensioner being bottomed out. Just by looking you can't tell the difference between a timing belt with 100k vs 20k.

If the car has 240k miles how many times should the timing belt have been changed

The recommended scheduled maintenance interval for the 5VZ-FE is 90,000. Prior to 98 you may still see 60,000 mi. From my understanding, that interval is a carry over from the 3VZ. Recommended time would be every eight years regardless of mileage. The belts will deteriorate over time but the most likely cause of a belt failure is normally the tensioner, waterpump, upper pulley, or idler pulley failing.

Personally I would NEVER cheat or shortcut my engine! I implore you to please take the time to do it correctly the first time with the correct parts and tools. I highly recommend replacing the following regardless of whether or not you "think" they''ll be ok:

  • Waterpump
  • Thermostat
  • Hoses
  • Timing Belt
  • Idler
  • Upper Pulley
  • Tensioner
  • Cam Seals
  • Crank Seal
  • Crank Bolt
  • New Belts

Once done you can sleep pretty darn good knowing you did it correctly the first time.

Google this sight and READ, READ, READ....

And yes, you'll see a ton of threads about New Crank Bolt v. Old Crank Bolt, OEM v. Aftermarket, etc...etc......... When in doubt, change it out and stick to the FSM. You won't go wrong.
