timing belt????

Hey guys 1 question on the timing belt. I have a 2000 4 runner SR5 3.4 L V6with 122K on it and I got to wondering about something. I just changed out the timing belt in my wifes Honda as a friend told me I had better do it because it had 155K on it and if the belt breaks driving down the road, it trashes all the valves and what not (basically requires and engine overhaul) so I did it. I forget the exact terminology he used, but it was something about an interconnected engine??? Anyways, would my 4 runner be the same or is it just a replaced belt? It was NOT at all cheap for the honda to be changed out and who knows when I'll have another extra chunk of change. I am somewhat mechanical but the timing belt thing was out of my league on the honda. Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

Upon further reading here I meant to say interference engine and from what I can tell my 200 is NOT an interference engine. That sure is a godo thing because my mechanic wants $500 to change it out. WTF?

You were lucky with the Honda having 155,000 miles and not breaking. I have had plenty of Honda's and having a interference engine is a big concern. I have known people that have had big problems when their timing belts break. The new Accord 4 cyl. have a timing chain instead of the belt.

Anyway, to answer your question, questions? Your engine is a Non-Interfernce engine. The recommended timing belt change is 90,000 miles. It seems a lot of members here go past the 90,000 mile mark. Having 122,000 miles, it may be time to think about replacing it. Also, $500 may be on the low side, they usually change the water pump, all the belts, antifreeze and tension adjuster. Find out what that $500 covers, it may just be the belt.
