timing belt

Soo i have a 98 4runner with 133k miles on it. Timing belt was last changed around 85-90k miles. Anyone think i need to be worrying? i know it should be good until close to 200k miles but just seeing what everyone thinks...

You should replace it every 6 years OR 90k miles, whichever comes first...

I had it done some years ago so I dont know about costs.
Side note: I have heard some folks talking about never having it done and getting over 200k miles.
I guess its good having the non interupt motor(or whatever its called)

I just did mine on my '97. I checked around and the going price seemed to be about $250 for the timing belt and other belts. Odds are that water pump will need changed also if this has not been done previously, and it is a good idea since you are already in that area. I did the timing belt, water pump, t-stat, hoses and drive belts for under $200.

$200 must be just for the parts, right? The labor for all that is a lot more.

My '90 with 193K still has the original timing chain.

I guess that I wasn't clear, that was for the parts, I did the labor. I couldn't stomach the cost of having it done. I'm cheap. Also gave me the chance to check out the cam and crank seals etc. because I had just purchased the truck and had no idea when the last time the timing belt had been replaced.

I just had mine (1997 ltd, 170,000 miles) done last week:

<li>Water pump
<li>Thermostat
<li>Oil change</li>
Total cost came to about $590.
It had been about 110k since the previous timing belt change and the water pump was still original. I think it was a fair price.

I paid 430 for my timing belt and water pump done, and some other small belts. I thought it was a good deal.

Funny thing, on the recommended maintenace schedule at toyotapartsandservice website, there is no mention of when to change the belts or waterpump.

You might as well do the belts since you have it all apart. Same thing with the waterpump.

I have a fleet of Tundra's with the 3.4 motor. I use a kit from NAPA that has the timing belt, water pump, etc. in it.
I see no need to go to a dealership or use Toyota parts. If I can do it, any decent mechanic should be able to do it...(LOL)

That dealer quote you posted is just about exactly the same as the dealer quote I got here in Pittsburgh. Must be standard Toyota pricing across the board? The dealership guy told me to come back to him after I'd received quotes at independent mechanics and he'd work with me to lower his price, but I didn't bother going through that. I just went with my regular mechanic, whom I trust and knew wouldn't overcharge me.
