It varies - IDK the price of only the timing belt but MANY do the water pump, serpentine belt, and idler bearings at the same time,gee-whiz said:Anyone have any idea of cost of labor and part for installing new timing belt in 4Runner Sport 4WD V-8?
NDRYDEN123 said:just got my runner back from the dealer this morning. they charged me $348.95 for labor, $61.75 for a timing belt, however my service rep told me that the water pump did not need to be replaced. he said that sometimes they need to replace them and sometimes they don't. which didn't make sense to me since I told them to do both b/c you take the water pump off to get to the t-belt. oh well once it starts to heat up ill just take it back in. this was done at haley toyota in midlothian va for you va members looking to have this done.
eskimochaos said:Fair price, you should have insisted he do the water pump too. Did he replace the serpentine belt as well?
NDRYDEN123 said:yea they did the serpentine belt as well. now I hav 112,000ish on the truck so I was well over 20,000 miles over due on the belts but he really insisted that the water pump didn't need to be done so if they want to save me roughly $300 then so be it. if the truck starts running hot in the next month ill take it back in and have them redo it all over with a new water pump. but I thought that I got one heck of a deal when they quoted me roughly $800 for water pump, timing belt, and seals before I brought it all in. plus they did a full front brake job at $250 something as well.

eskimochaos said:Good you have a service rep you can trust. Most would be happy to give you the water pump. Did you do spark plugs yet? Your do in 8k. Regarding the overage on the timing belt - its more a function of time than miles that affect the belt. Some have said when theirs is replaced it looks new and that's at 140+k. I guess climate plays a huge role in the deterioration of rubber parts like that.
NDRYDEN123 said:yeah I agree. all the service advisors at my dealer are very trust worthy. now that you mentioned the spark plugs I wll have them done at my next oil change which will be about that time I guess. as far as the climate and the deterioration of rubber I'm not sure what this trucks been through. it started in delaware and is now been through one winter here in VA. I do know that the serpentine belt was about to break. it had a lot of cracks and the tech who did the t-belt said it was bad but not extremely bad. but I figured I shouldn't push my luck with it any longer.
If i have the 100K mile warranty, can they replace the timing belt and water pump for FREE?![]()
Unfortunately, they won't cover it under warranty. Maybe if the timing belt actually broke and you were considerably lower than 90K, but otherwise, it's considered routine maintenance. Just like changing the oil. Just a tab bit more expensive![]()
:dammit: I'm @ 86K miles with my '03 Limited V8, and nothing broke yet. Whenever i hit that 100K mark it would kinda suck that i paid all that money for extended warranty and get nothing for it.![]()
I hav 112,000ish on the truck so I was well over 20,000 miles over due on the belts but he really insisted that the water pump didn't need to be done so if they want to save me roughly $300 then so be it.
Guess i have to baby my truck 'til i get 112K. This will buy me time to save some monies.![]()
haha I hear ya on that one. but I'm not one to really baby a car. I put it through its paces but this I toyota reliability we're talking. I think they say 90,000 just tobe on the safe side. now I'm not saying take the risk like I did. I would still get evrything done at 90,000 miles.
With the timing belt its more of a time factor than miles factor. Climate, location etc ect all play into the deterioration of the belt. Toyota estimates that 90k is a good mileage because the average driver will get there after about 5 years which is their estimated lifespan of the belt. I know people who have taken them off at 130k and the belt still be perfectly fine. I recommend doing it at 100k to be safe and have a nice even maint routine for when you hit 200k
