Timing Belt

I have an 04 Sport with the 4.7, 28K miles. After reading a while on this forum I find that I should have changed the timing belt by now.Really?

Toyota recommends the timing belt be replaced at 60k miles. Mine was done a 110k miles and it looked almost identical to the new one replacing it. Since the 4.7 is an interference engine (a broken belt will lead to major engine damage) you should follow what Toyota says.

He has a 2004 - it's not just miles but age - rubber breaks down over time regardless of use. (That said the biggest ageing effect is UV which a TB won't be exposed to of course). It's reallly low miles to be considering it but given it's an interference engine my guess is you will want to do it some time this year or early next for peace of mind.

for the v8, its 90k not 28k or 60k .

My guess is that he meant 128k miles, not 28k miles.

Yeah,only 28K.But I had no idea about the 6 year deal.I just dont want to take a chance.

I changed my 03 timing belt at 48K miles last year by myself. The maintenance manual says 90k miles or 7 years. I did it so that I do not have to think about it for another 7 years. Engine heat takes its toll on rubber but with only 28k miles I would probably go a little farther.

Spoke with a tech at a dealer today.90K or 6 yrs.$475 just for the belt change.Damn.

water pump

I did mine at 110K and figured as long as I was in'a neighborhood I prolly should replace the water pump at the same time. Its only a few skinned knuckles more than a timing belt and requires the same stuff come off to get there.

Just changed mine with 58K on a 2003. The manual states 90K miles or 72 months/6 years. Better safe than sorry

Also make sure to change water pump as well. Since a majority of your cost is the labor to get at the timing belt and water pump. Would hate for the water pump to go out a year later and have to do it all over again.
