Timing chain alignment??

So I am helping a buddy out on his 1986 22RE powered 4 runner. It was recently rebuilt and running funny when he bought it so we decided to check the valve timing.

We may have turned the lower end while the cam chain sprocket was outside of the chain.

On most engines I've worked on, cam timing marks are set while the engine is at TDC.

But the guides I read say you have to remove the harmonic balancer, the oil pump, and the timing chain cover???

I just need to see the mark on the lower end, do I need to remove the timing chain cover to see it? Can I also see the timing chain (The bright link) to align it with the mark on the crankshaft?

Never done a 22re. but have done many others Some help if I may, First your timing the cams to the crank so as long as number 1 is at tdc then your @ the mark. Just remember the cams are not turning if the head is on and chain is not on so if you turn the engine slow by hand and feel resistance you may be hitting a valve. Once you are sure #1 is at tdc then time the cams to the crank.
