Tint 5% or 35%?

Suppose the only purpose of tinting my 4runner is to keep it cool in the summer, NOT for privacy reasons.

Which all-window-tint would do a better job: 5% or 35%?

I always thought that 5% on all windows would do a much better job at keeping it cool, but lately I read that it would in fact heat up the inside of the vehicle more than 35%.

Is this true?

If it is then would 50% on all windows keep out even more heat than 35%?

The % does not matter a great deal. A 35% tint could reflect more heat than a 25% tint.

Why not do 20%? It would be between the two.

Your right about the lower the number the less light it lets in.

However, a lower number does not always equal a lower temperature. A 50% could keep out more heat than a 35%.

It is, but they still can. 99% of cases it will be a bike cop, since they are the maggots of the police world, and only do traffic violations. There's a reason normal cops talk crap on them. While they are out on calls, helping society, bike cops are pulling in revenue for the city.

Anyways, 5% will make your front windows green. On the back windows you can do whatever you want, but the front, you can't go darker than 20% without using 2 layers of tint. I have a layer of 20% before my 5%, which means yes, it is darker than "Limo."

For the best results, I recommend going with 20%, it's a perfect balance of privacy, and heat/UV resistance. As for the rear windows, do whatever suits you best. Stock glass isn't tinted, it's colored. So I recommend doing 20% over those as well if you want the UV protection and more heat resistance.

You can always go the legal route like me, but depending on the state, it could be close to no tint at all.

For pure heat rejection, Huper Optik makes one of the best available tint without getting it dark.

However the down side is it'll be hard to get a match with the factory tint color on the 4Runner. One of the reasons, I chose not to tint the 4Runner. Another was if it matched on the outside, the inside would be off, which would annoy me to no end.

If it was like some BMW X5 with the option of no factory tint, I would go that route and tint it with 30% Huper Optik all around. I have 30% and 40% Huper on my other car, it's much cooler than before. Huper Optik is expensive as hell though, easily double, even triple the cost of most typical tint. The material is thicker than normal tint.

I had 5% on my back windows of a car at one point.

I was hating it at night. I mean, you really gotta use your side mirrors.

I also have it on my pickup. If it weren't for a sliding rear window, I would be backing into things a night.

I was pulled over for something other than the tint once, and the cop gave me a written warning for the tint also.

Apparently, in Illinois, you are supposed to have a 3" strip in your back window with no tint. The cop said they just don't enforce it because peoples tint is from the factory covering the whole window. Could you imagine how stupid that would look?

No you cannot. 5% will make them green. The back windows won't turn green because they are already colored (not tinted) from the factory. The from glass is green, not clear, on our 4Runners. So, when you put on a tint that dark, it brings out the green in the glass, rather than the black of the tint.

If you want 5% on the front windows, you first need a "neutralizing" layer down, such as 35% o 20%. Which yes, makes it more than "limo" and I do not recommend doing.

Can you recommend another film that is like Huper Optik but not as expensive?

The installer that did the Huper Optik, recommended Suntek (spelling could be wrong) when I originally wanted something darker than 30%. I decided against, because I wanted the tint all around to be Huper, than mix and match.

The other shop that some of my buddies use (non Huper Optick authorized, can't do Huper unless authorized) uses Geoshield for ceramic tint. Ceramic tint is a bit more expensive, but doesn't interfere with the radio and/or navigation reception and it will not fade like dye tint.

Those are the two were recommended to me, but I have first hand experience with their performance.

Or to get a tint that really reflects light, you should go with like a "magic" black type of tint, but then again it wouldn't match the rear tint (unless you are not a 4th gen Runner & have no tint from the factory)..

I've decided to get 50% on all the windows except the front window as well as the driver/passenger windows.
