35% in the front is guaranteed by most tint shops to not get you pulled over.
20% in the front is stepping into the "anal cop" territory, where they usually don't hear about cops hassling people, but it occasionally happens.

So you can take it for what it is worth. When I moved to NC I stopped at a State Police Post and ask for a copy of the law. They were happy to give it to me.

HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN SOUTH CAROLINA?
Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In South Carolina, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.
Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed along the top of the windshield above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.
Front Side Windows Must allow more than 27% of light in.
Back Side Windows Must allow more than 27% of light in.
Rear Window Must allow more than 27% of light in.
HOW REFLECTIVE CAN THE TINT BE IN SOUTH CAROLINA?
Similar to sunglass lenses, some tinting film contain metallic elements that help in reflecting incoming light and reducing the glare and heat generated by visible light.
Front Side Windows Must be non-reflective, state law is not specific about what this means.
Back Side Windows Must be non-reflective, state law is not specific about what this means.
OTHER SOUTH CAROLINA RULES AND REGULATIONS
Restricted Colors The tint color(s) of RED are not legal by state law.
Side Mirrors Dual side mirrors are required if back window is tinted.
Certificate Requirements Manufacturers of film need to certify the film they sell in the state. Ask your dealer if they are using ceritified film.
Sticker Requirements The sticker to identify legal tinting is required between the film & glass on each tinted window.
Medical Exemption State allows medical exemptions for special tint. For more details about the specific terms of the exemption, consult your state law.

I don't know about guarantees. The shops up here, will only put in tint if you sign the release form so they're not held liable if you get stopped. The shop that did mine recommened 50% up front, but IMO that's like no tint, why bother.
For the 4Runner, I would get light tint with the color to match the rear. If there's no factory tint Huper Optik all the way.

I took my truck back to the tint shop today and had them pull off the 35% from the 2 front windows, and put 20% on instead. It looks much better/darker.
The first time I went in, I had them do 20% over the rear side windows (over the factory tint), and 35% over the very rear window. So next week I think I'll get the very back window re-tinted also and get 20% on it.
Also, I am going to have them tint my front windshield. It'll keep out almost all UV rays which will help preserve my seats/dashboard. It will also minimize the huge amounts of light let in through the front, causing all of my other 7 windows to appear much darker. Has anyone else done their front windshield, I am not sure whether to go with 50% or 35%.

My Theory: Go as dark as the law will allow (or if you think you can get away with darker, go darker).
Colo Law says I can't tint my front windows, and can tint the back as dark as I want. I'll probably do exactly what Josh did.

Serious as a heart attack. I could see fine out the side windows at night when I had 35% on them, so I don't think it would be a big deal for the front windshield. And yes I meant the whole windshield, quite a few people do it, I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience.

That would be pretty safe. I had them take off the 35% today and put 20% for the front though. I like it dark, but I didn't want to go with 5% in the front with anal CA cops everywhere. Also, if I decide to tint my whole front windshield to 35%, it will make all of my front side windows more like 10-15% instead of 20% because it won't have that huge area of light coming in as much.
