Tint or no tint??

Here's a photoshop of tint on the sides. Prob about a 35%.. What do you think? Tint it or no.

Not sure how hot it getts in NJ but down south there is no question. TINT.

I am still up in the air on tinting my new truck when it comes in. The back windows all have privacy glass on them, so I will probably just wait & see. I am hesitant about tint because the laws always seem to be changing & what is legal in your state may not be legal in another state (which can bite you in the butt on a road trip). On the other hand, I have to agree that in the South, tint is almost a mandate for the summer months.
 
I thought it was illegal in jersey to have tint on the front windows. Luckily it isn't in VA because I have tint :)
 
GET THE TINT!!!! makes it look bitching. all you got to do is roll down ur windows if you see a cop. if its raining...umm chance it. haha.
 
Tint. No question.

Just make sure you go through a reputable shop. You should be able to get a discount through a dealership if you don't know someone in the business. Also, find out what brand of film they are using, as they are not all created equal.

This is kind of an open-ended statement Cleric... ?! Any suggestions???? I'm going to get mine tinted to the legal limit soon and you're scaring the bjesus outta me....!! Reputable or not, I definitely suggest getting a lifetime warranty on the tintjob. I have that on my jeep...

(legal limit only because we have annual inspections here in MA, so it's not about the cops stopping the car, it's about failing the inspection - & they DO check)
 
Guys

Good thread for me as I'm looking into tint as well. I have a white 06 SR5. Do you normally tint all the windows or do some of them have factory tint color in the glass that do not need it? Also someone mentioned to check the quality of the material. Exactly how do you do that? Is there a good brand name to look out for? What do you guys think would be a good tint to use for a white 4 runner. I have not had a car tinted in years so I don't know the shades available.

Madico and Llumar are high quality. Most important is to avoid dyed films and get a lifetime warranty

You should never have a problem on a road trip!! If you have legal tint for your state an out of state cop can do NOTHING to you. No ticket or anything else.

Examples: I live in NC. SUVs, Trucks, and Vans can have 35% max on the front windows and anything on any window behind the driver. Cars can not have anything darker than 35% on any window.

I lived in MI until 4 years ago. Cars, SUVs, Trucks, or Vans can have anything you want behind the driver. Up to 5%. The front windows can only have tint 4 inches down from the top of the window. About the same distance as your sun visor would cover.

I have made many trips to MI since moving to NC and I have 35% on the front windows and have never been pulled over. When I moved to NC we had to peel the tint off my mother-in-laws 97 civic since it had 5% on the windows. Legal in MI. Not in NC. We have inspections here also and they check it with a light meter. It cost $10 more for an inspection if you have aftermarket tint.

Research your local tint laws. Make a call or stop by a police station. I went to a state police post and they gave me a copy of the laws right out of the book.
 
mine's tinted. makes a world of difference. imo, as long as you are not driving stupidly or recklessly, then you should be ok.

things to look for:

dyed film - no, unless you want to replace within the year
hybrid, fully metallized, ceramic - yes, have lifetime warranties

hybrid is a mix of dyed and fully metallized. it has another name, starts with an e, its known as e___ dyed film. its got metal content to give it the lifetime warranty. usually best if you have navigation antenna built into the window, like rear windows of acura's or audi's. nothing to worry about with the front two windows of the 4runner though.

fully metallized - no color options usually. but carries the lifetime warranty.

ceramic - best film i know of. lifetime warranty. really really expensive though.

all films provide uv protection. ceramic also gives protection so you won't feel the heat on your arm. i'm blanking on what that is right now though.

don't use any ammonia based products to clean it. the ammonia can be abrasive and scratch the film. my recommendation, an ammonia free foam glass cleaner and a microfiber towel. or a mild soapy water solution.

brands are brands. just try to stick with something that has a lifetime warrranty. make sure the shop warranties their work as well. there's many brands to choose from: Llumar, Suntek, SolarGard, Madico, etc. Ceramic includes Huper Optik, V-Kool, etc.

Ceramic takes a really long time to dry, especially in the winter.

do check your state tint laws, though. see what's legal and what's not. your choice on going illegal, but some shops won't do illegal work..

No, I dont think so, I read somewhere even if your visiting you have to abide by the new states law. It probably wont be a problem though unless your driving reckalssly or its a secondary thing because you got pulled over for a second reason
 
It is illegal in NJ and you will get stopped and summonsed. You can not go through NJ State MV inspection. It
