Tint Removal

Well I got a warning for my window tint the other day. Iowa is one of few that still ban it from the front windows. I got it installed about a year and a half ago and I instead of getting a hefty ticket ( its pretty expensive here ) I decided just to take it off.

Anybody have any recommendations on how to get it to come off easily?? Is it something I can do myself or do I need to take it back to the shop to do it??

i hear ya, i rode around almost 2 before i got a warning also. to remove use alcohol & a plastic scraper. spray it on, let sit awhile, start scrapping, respray & scrap as needed.

Get a flat single edge razor blade and work up a corner of the tint. Once you can get a grip on it it should pull off with a firm pull. This will leave the adhesive still on the window. Mix a solution of a little bit of dishwashing liquid (Joy, Dawn, etc) and water. If you have a spray bottle that is ideal but if you don't then just soak a rag and wipe it on. Let set a few minutes and use the razor blade to scrape the glue off. Should come off fairly easy in strings. Most tint glue is water soluable. Take care not to scratch the glass with the razor blade. Holding it flat (parallel) at an angle should not scratch it but all bets are off if you put the edge perpendicular (like you are cutting it) to the glass. If you feel uncomfortable doing this the shop will do it in a few minutes.

I just got ticket for tinted windows. I removed them last week by using simple green and heat gun. They worked great.

might have to try the wife's blow dryer out on em, at least get them heated up a little to get a corner started with a razor blade, then hopefully they just peal off and im not too concerned about the residue, i think i can scrub hard enough to get that off.

No you can't. 100 years ago I tinted windows and striped trucks while going to college. I took many pieces of tint off and the method described above is quick and easy. Technology has changed a lot of things but tint is still the same, as I found out while tinting my daughter's car last year. Still a pain in the a$$ to do right.

I had mine installed in Indiana in the Summer of 2010 when I briefly lived there. Within 12 hours of being back in NJ I got a ticket for it. I wasn't pulled over for tint, however. Long story short I honked at a cop that attempted to merge by cutting numerous people off almost causing an accident. So he nailed me with tinted windows, improper use of a horn, and my license plate frame which blocks the tippy top of the "N" in New Jersey. A real cocksucker if you ask me.

They haven't bothered me since and I still have it.

Once the tint is peeled off I just clean the windows using Stoner's invisible glass and some newspaper. The alcohol based window cleaners work the best, btw.

if you have a steamer, that will take it right off very easily
