Hey everyone,

Looking for some advice on a tire purchase. I know the BFG KM2 is a good quality tire with plenty of good reviews, but I've heard some good things about the new-ish Firestone Destination MT2. The BFG's have good reviews for days, but I'm hoping someone has some experience with the Firestones to add. Most of the reviews I've read appear to be solicited or very limited ("good tire, rides great"). Any help is appreciated.

Note: This is a third vehicle that will not be daily driven. It will be used mainly to drive to/from trails for off-roading.

Id look into something more aggressive if its just a trailrig. Just a few ideas, but you might want to think about some rockers, tsl's, trxus, thornbirds  (if anyones paying attention), stt's maybe, or boggers depending on how far you have to drive on a paved road.

Just put Copper Discoverer STT Pro on my 97 and so far I'm loving them. Little noise at slower speeds but seems to drown out at highway speeds. They look great and cheaper than BFG's. I have run BFG's before (not on a T4R) and was happy with them, but IMO they are overpriced. Haven't had these off road yet (just put them on yesterday), but they look like they will take everything you throw at them.

I am running the Firestone MT2's. They so far have been a great tire. I have taken them on the OBDR twice, had them in mud, sand, snow, pavement, gravel, trees, and rocks and not had a problem with them.

I think they ride pretty good and aren't too noisy. On the street I keep them about 40 PSI and about 15 on the trails. I am about to warranty them because when I was crawling through the lava rocks it sliced up the lugs pretty good and some of them are coming apart or have chunks missing out of them.

Before these I ran the original Firestone MT's and again, never had a problem with them.

I am running the Firestone MT2's. Had them on for one year and about 15,000 miles. Years ago I ran the original MT's on a different truck. By a large margin this is a vastly improved tire. IMO they are quiet for a MT tire. They are fine on road and great off road. And to my surprise very good in the rain. Zero vibrations issues or odd wear issues. Oh and to me they look fantastic. I will buy them again and highly recommend them.

What has you wear been per 1/32nds and over what mileage?

I am looking at 255 75 17 MT2 because it is only 47lb and LT-C instead of E.

I am still happy with my AT3W Wildpeaks but I want a Plan B should I decide I want a 3-ply sidewall tire again. Don't want to go back to LT-D KO2s, heavy and really not as good as the Wildpeak anywhere; just stronger.

If the MT2 will wear down all together in 20k with frequent offroad use, that won't work well considering it is 250/tire.

The Wildpeak wears like butter at first, then wear improves (though I am sure performance worsens in absolute terms; I use the locker and MTS offroad and do not push it on road so I cannot tell). Currently I think I might be able to get 30,000 out of them (now at 17,300). I don't consider tires under 6/32 suitable for offroad use, so I don't count any mileage under that point in my estimates.

Thanks for any precise info!

You might want to take a look at the General Grabber X3's. I've had a set on (5 including spare) for a year now on my daily driver. They are quiet on the highway for a mud tire. Much quieter than the MasterCraft AT's that were on it when I bought it. They will get me anywhere I need to go.
And they are wearing well and balanced up well too. I've put over 10,00 miles on them so far. They are excellent off road too!
I am running 265 75 16. They are 3 ply sidewalls and C load rated.
Good Luck!

I really like my KO'2s and they have done well for life san. I have the E series but that was because I do so much gravel roads , not crawling, just to get home . Would prob get more life if I did not drive so much gravel, just my thoughts.

The only thing I did not like is the way they acted on icy pavement. Of course few tires are good on ice, but these are slick on ice.

Ill get about another 8 months out of these I think, then will be looking for replacements so I have been following the tire threads.
Next tire, half life off road, half year in the snow

I just measured the tires front and rear. I have had the tires on for 26,000 miles and they have 10/32" left. I believe that is about half of what they were new.

Thanks! Do you know approximately how many of those 26,000 miles were off pavement? Did noise and/or comfort on road change over time? Anything noteworthy in terms of performance either on or off road? Thanks again.

I did not want to take a look because I had them at a whopping 62lb on my spreadsheet. However, I see in Tire Rack that the 255 75 17 weighs 55lb. That still is 8lb more than the Firestone and the same as KM3, but at least is a conversation worth having. The Wildpeak MT is 53 but I fear its soft compound will wear out too quickly.

Thanks for the input!

I hope that the Wildpeaks will keep doing fine for me. I need to see how they do now that the tread is lower.

I cannot answer this as my tires are brand new and were practically new when I warrantied them. This is also not my daily driver, more of an adventure toy so they hardly get any mileage on them.

Nearly all the miles have been on road. Off-road they are amazing though. Rocks, mud, heavy mud, slippery mud, and dry dirt they performed excellent. And again they are very good in the rain. Just as good as the AT I ran for years and years. Did a little snow here and there and the were just fine as well.

Noise wise they are slightly louder than the AT's I had but not enough to matter. I would guess on a 5th gen it would matter even less. You can tell they are heavier but then again they are also bigger than the previous 5 sets of tires I have had on the truck. Not a big drop in MPG's though.

After the first few months I thought why did I ever wait to get MT's? They "look" so much better than an AT tire.
