Tire advice, on road use

Guys, looking for 265/75/16's for my budget build project. It will probably never see a trail, it's my DD, need good on road manners, decent snow ability, somewhat quiet and LOW BUDGET. I had Duratracs on my 99', they were great but they were wasted on me. For this one I'm considering:

1.) Yokahoma Geolander HT/S
2.) General Altimax
3.) Bridgestone Dueler HT
4.) General Grabber HTS
5.) Dunlap Radial Rover RVXT

Anyone have any experience with any of them? All advice is appreciated.

I have these on my company truck. They are great on the pavement. Quiet, ect. They also do fine for very limited trail stuff, if you have to do something like that. I have yet to drive them in the snow, but I wouldn't expect anything but stellar out of them.
 
a friend of mine has them on his fjz80 and they are amazing the places he can go and how well they are on the road in both dry and rain and snow, super quiet, and if i was gonna get a set of tires for a rig that saw 90% of its time on the pavement and occasional light to medium trail use i would strongly look at them i would put them up against the BFG at all day long
 
I currently run the Yoko HTS. Great tire on dry and wet. Cannot comment on snow as I live in Houston and we don't see much of that stuff. They actually have great of road manners as well. I use mine for fishing at the beach all the time and have never been stuck, shallow mud too. Very quiet on road. Great life. About 50k on these. A couple of buddies have gone through a few sets at work on trucks and love them as well. I do think the side wall rolls a little around fast turns but I don't do that often.
 
A friend with a Tundra and 14,000 miles on his dynapros developed some serious tire hop. Two new tires on the front and he was cured. It may be an isolated experience. They do ride smooth but low budget they are not ($900+ for 4 with OE tire size). He had Nitto TGs before and got over 68,000 miles from them. I wish I had gotten them over the Revo 2s, but the discount for the latter was just too good at the time. They can be had for roughly $170 each here in VA before all the extra BS included.

The Geolanders would be my call, I would also check out the Firestone Destination LE for $$ savings. Very similar to the Dueler but ultimately seems to last longer. I have used them in the snow with rather decent success.

At least as important as which brand/model is to make sure you get the passenger version of the tire (P) and not the light truck version (LT).
 
Just put on 4 Nitto Terra Grapplers and love them. For me it was between the TG's and the Falken Rocky Mountains. The TG's are great on the road. Good luck. I know how it is...I fretted for weeks until I made up my mind.
 
I have Firestone Destination LE's and they are absolutely awesome in rain, best tire in rain I have ever driven, also they are very quiet on highway, but it hasn't snowed yet here as it's still considered summer so no snow here yet and I just put them on a month.

Great point.
Pros of a P series tire: lighter for better mpg, softer sidewall for a smoother ride, less expensive.
Cons of a P series tire: the softer sidewall can't take hard offroad abuse but will do light wheeling just fine, about half the tread depth and won't last as long and less depth for snow traction, may be a little vague in handling because of the soft sidewall.

I'm running the Yoko AT/S, LT, Load Range-D. I did have them siped. They are quiet and smooth on the road, wheel well, are great in the rain and snow. They are not harsh and handle great. Also they are wearing great.

the nittos are a great tire yes, i had them and loved them and if i was going for a tire that was gonna be a 90+% on read tire id get them again, but in this case i think those are a bit outta the OPs price range, look at the rest of the tires, only one of the ones he sugested hits the ~$150 mark and last i checked those TG are more like $170, no if he is willing to go that high then yeah go for them but thats a big jump especially when he is on a budget build. but they are a great tire yes
 
The Kid is dead on. It's not that I'm real cheap or anything, I'm just trying to keep this one a budget build. Ideally I'd go with Duratracs again or BFG AT's but this one is being done for as little money as possible.
 
I Currently have Dunlop Radial Rover RVXT, pretty good traction, wet, mud and snow, I was considering getting snow tires but the thread dept was ok, and gives good traction in winter, winters where i live is brutal ( -40 deg C ) and snow remains hard packed most of the winter.
Summer driving was ok, did about 4000km this summer and tire wear was nice and even, the few times i did go off road was ok, no rock crawling but good traction on unpaved surfaces.
I think the side wall is pretty tuff as these don't ride super comfortable but they are holding out pretty good. I'm going to buy BFG AT next time.

Quick question: what is the ride difference between 265/75 vs 265/ 70?

the 75's look alot more beefy and round, any reviews on the ride comfort. braking/ acceleration with the bigger tires?
 
I have the yoko geo at/s on my forester, I think there great. Good snow, dirt, gravel traction, ok ice traction. They are a little noisy, and track alittle on grooved roads, but all in all I like them. I like the budget build thread, it peaked my intrest, as I am still searching for a runner, and I would probably be on the same track as you.

Thanks, it'll be a fun little project for me. I have $1200 left in the budget but I have A LOT to stretch it on. Wish me luck.
