Tire advice

I've got a 96 4runner, running 245/75R16 Dunlop AT20 "grandtrek" tires and every time I drive in any rain it's a miracle I make it home alive.

Thus, I need new tires. A friend recommended BFG A/T 265/70R16 so I priced them out and it's going to cost me near $1200 at shops around town. I am looking to get a set of 4 around $800 so what are my options?

Are there cheaper brands that are almost as good? My primary concern is good traction in rain (maybe snow).

those tires almost killed me too. On a road trip in Quebec. I bit the bullet and bought michelin ltx at2's. They have been awesome for 3 years, and still probably half left. With tires you definitely get what you pay for. I've owned several trucks, and am a truck driver, and there is no substitution. Cheap tires often go out of balance, out of round, poor treadlife, etc. sorry but I suggest spending 1200 on michelins.

Here is an awesome tire. They are in stock. Less than $500 shipped new. And are a great road tire for being a mud tire. They are great in mud and snow. Good in the rain, not too great in ice.

If you want to go up a tire size. Then you can get these. They are exactly like the BFG all terrain so they are better in rain and ice, not as good in snow and mud. They are actually cheaper and would also be under $500 shipped.

There are Discount Tire stores in WA if you feel like hopping the ferry.

Hankook Dynapros are reasonably priced and have very good reviews.

You could do 265/70/16, or 265/75/16 if you wanted to go up a step.

I just purchased a set last week but don't have them on, yet, because they had to order them.

I'm in the market for more of an AT (on-road/off-road) tire - so far I've considered Hankook Dynapro's. But these indeed look decent (or Sentinels but they're not in stock @ threadwright).

They are a mud tire so you get a little hum. Only noticeable when the windows are down, not bad compared to others. I get 18.3 MPG highway and thats with 220k miles on the clock. Stock o2's, old wires and plugs. If you call them up they will tell you how long they are back ordered but the best bet is to get the ones in stock. Here are the 33's I have on the wifes truck.

Hydroplaning is mostly about tread depth so any new tire will serve you well for that.

For general wet conditions, one thing to keep in mind. Passenger tires (P), as a group, are better than Light Truck tires (LT) on wet pavement. -- and less expensive, too. The two tire types always get lumped together but the distinction is significant. The BFG, for instance, is LT only. Many tires come in both P and LT.

I second the vote for Treadwrights. Love mine, and I loved paying 1/2 price for them vs. brand new name brand tires.

I know I am new to this part of the site but I have been looking for a great all around tire that performs in any weather or condition and for a 6 ply sidewall I like the following tire

price isn't that bad either... if your doing more rock crawling you can get into the kevlar version. I know people with them and they wear good, they dont make much noise, they look good and they are good in any weather or condition.. A++ from me. I will take photo's of my buddies jeep wrangler with them on it.

I love my Yokohama geolander at-s, they're sweet tires way better than the michelins at2's that were on it when I bought it. I highly reccomend the geolanders,

I dont know if anyone sells them around you but I can get some BFG A/T Look alike retreads for $60 each mounted and balanced! Its a great deal and I normally get 30k miles out of them, life time rotation
