tire dressing damaging tires?

I read where using pertroleum distillates on tire sidewalls (for the black tire shine) can damage tires and void tire mileage warranties- this is Michelin's policy.

Does anyone know which common tire products (Armor All, etc..) have petroleum distillates and which are safe? My thought is that the tire "gels" are the better products.

Yes it is true. Michelin also doesn't recommend the use of silicone-based tire dressings for pretty much the same reason.

I know Michelin is coming out with a new line of tire/wheel care products that should be safe. In the mean time, a water-based dressing, like Zaino's Z16, 303 Aerospace and I believe Lexol Vinylex are safe.

Use This!

I use the McGuire Hot tire shine spray. You spray it on like hair spray, it works unlike any product ive ever used and as far as what is on the can: there are no harmful ingredients. If anyone knows any better PLEASE let me know. But i have a white sport and i hate that most tire dressings sling once you start driving. NOT THIS STUFF, you can spray it on and drive away as soon as your done and its dry to the touch. Highly Recomended( i guess unless i find out its going to void my warranty)

Michelin's response:

What kind of tire dressing or cleaner does Michelin recommend for the sidewalls? Can you give me a specific brand to use that will not void the tire warranty?

Answer:

We recommend using a soft brush and mild soap to clean tires. Tire dressings that contain petroleum products, alcohol or silicones can accelerate the aging process and contribute to cracking.

Michelin does not endorse the use of after-market conditioners. The effects of such products are unknown as it would be impossible to test all of the products on the market today.
