Tire Durability in Staten Island

I have stock Dunlops on my 2011 TE with 6800 miles. Having just moved to Staten Island I cannot be more surprised at the horribly bumpy roads! One local says she buys a new tire for her car once a month!! I know my all terrain tires are tougher than the average bear but I must confess I am fretting a tad.

I'll gladly take any and all thoughts you fine folks may have. Thanks!

I live on Staten Island! Not from here, but unfortunately I live here. There's a couple of other people on this forum from SI as well.

My experience with Staten Island and automobiles- When I had my 2007 SE, I put Revos on it almost right away. I got a flat like once a week. I don't know if it was the tires themselves (the Firestone shops out here definitely don't contribute) or just the roads. The roads are typical terrible NYC roads, with the added bonus of almost constant construction. Wherever you drive out here, some kind of construction is either going on, about to go on, or just finishing. There is debris EVERYWHERE.

Oddly enough I had BFG AT's on my old jeep, and finally put them on my '07 T4R just before I traded it in, and had no problems. I have 4800 miles on my 2011 TE now, and my stock garbage Duelers are squealing on turns already. Turns which they didn't squeal on originally.

It seems like a perfect combination of crummy tires and crummy roads.
 
Interesting. I'll keep my fingers crossed and drive on the bedt parts of the crappy road.

Do any if you all go off-roading? If so where do you go? In my research upstate is the place to go 5 or so hours away.
 
I don't really do heavy offroading, due to the lack of places around here to do it. Around here your best bet is the beach. If you fish, you can get a 4WD permit for Breezy Point, where you can drive on the beach. In the winter, people also go to Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. There you have miles of unused runways to play around on in the unplowed snow.

You can also go to Cape Henlopen in Delaware, where there is a lot more beach to drive on with less restrictions. Other than that I have to drive really far away to really go offroad.

But then again you can stay home and drive down Richmond Terrace on Sunday morning. Like Baja with traffic lights! :)

My guess is that she has a car with big wheels (19" or larger) and low profile tires. Either that, or she's a HORRIBLE driver.

I wouldn't worry too much about bad roads with the tires that are on the 4Runner.

Well, there's mine, and I've seen a black one around too. I have the grey one with the kayak racks on the roof. But the rest seem to be all white Limited's and SR5's. They love white cars out here too.

Don't worry about those paved streets, Verizon or ConEd will tear them up shortly...
 
I was down in NYC, Upper East Side with my Silver Trail this week. Spotted a few others around the area....on the FDR, LIE, Jersey Tpke..etc.

More than I would have thought for NYC, thought you guys preferred vehicles that came with leather:thumb3:
 
So I'm settled into my new job/life and want to begin offroading. South Staten Island has trees/parks but are not accessible. New Jersey is an option but does anyone know of a decent spot?
 
There's not many places to go offroad around here. You can get a beach permit for Breezy Point, which is part of Gateway NRA. It allows you to drive on the beach over there for fishing and surfing. Its only about a mile long, two miles in the winter. If beach is your thing you can drive about two hours and also get a beach permit for Cape Henlopen, Delaware. There's a hell of a lot more driveable beach down there. Other than that I think Rausch Creek is it.

By the way, are you in the Coast Guard? I saw a Silver Trail parked in Montalbano's/Tony's Pizza's Lot on Bay street a few weeks ago. Is that you?

There are lots of areas in PA. that have fire service or logging roads that are free, and easy to get to. Get yourself a really good topo map of PA/NY and you may be pleasantly surprised of whats out there and available.

Some of the "pay as you go" sites are really nice, but with a little investigation, you may be able to have great day for free.
