Tire expiration

Thinking of buying a set of extra tires when there is a discount or a sale. Is it wise to buy now, or wait for the old tires to get worn out because tires have expiration date.

I am weary about it because here in Az, I see a lot of blown tires on the i10 during summer.

The longest I have kept tires on my vehicles is 4 years.

Some say that tires will dry rot after 6-7 years.

This might be bullshit.

2 - How much do you expect to save on a set?
3 - Is it possible that a similar sale will be going on when you do need them?
4 - Might something happen (new vehicle?) that would render the new tires useless to you?

Tires age from sunlight (UV), ozone, heat, humidity. My wife’s little-used car tires had great tread left on Michelin tires, but after six years little cracks were forming. Had to get new tires this year.

Consider what [MENTION=266619]thennen[/MENTION] said. Recommend going to your local tire store and talk to them, have them inspect your tires. They might offer you a good deal on the spot.

I'm in So Cal, it gets hot here too, not worried about heat-related blowout.

I replace my tires when they start to perceptibly lose traction, which is before the wear bars. When yours are at that point, start looking. When a decent rebate appears,go to America's Tire and get your set. Or maybe Costco.

The only exception I'd say to this game is if you think you can actually get a pro-rated warranty claim for mileage in. I've been able to pull it off once with a set of Continental DWS on an Audi TT-S I owned.

That being said, you need your tires wearing uniformly (which typically requires good alignment and keeping your tires rotated regularly), plus things are going to run pretty ugly at the end of the life. Need your full set right around 2/32.

I was willing to do it on a sporty car. Not sure if I'd do it on a 4Runner that sees use offroad and with inclement weather.
