Tire Pressure Gauge

What type of gauge do you guys use to check the air pressure in your tires?

I've found the press in type to be difficult to use, especially if it's cold outside.

Why don't they sell gauges that are screw into the tire valve?

I'm not talking about ones that you keep permanently on the tire, because those will get stolen.

I'm talking about a tire gauge with a female fitting that can accommodate a wide range of pressures with a dial or digital readout, not ones dedicated to a specific pressure.

I have a few different brands and they're all digital. But the thing that I found that makes them or any of the old pencil type gauges easier to use is the depth you can insert the valve stem. That prevents losing air (all that darned hissing pisses me off) and allows you to get a good reading the first time. I bought most of those I'm currently using (5 vehicles) from WallyWorld so they're easy to find.

That insertion has to be quick though. There's no seal to keep air from escaping, so if you don't get a good and quick attempt at getting a reading, you must start over.

That's where I see the benefit of a screw on type of gauge.

I use an AccuTire that I got at sears about 15 years back... works great, and seems to be spot on accurate. Cold weather kicked on my spare's inflation warning this year, and it read the pressure at 26.5 PSI.. (the sensor goes off below 27). It has also agreed with every other decent quality gauge I've used over the years.

Oh, and Nuke, do you mind if I steal the paint off yours? I really would have liked to get mine that color!

Sorry to go off topic, but NO YOU CAN'T!!! LOL! But TY for the compliment. It's actually pretty close in color to my 1st T4R; a 1990 2nd gen with the 3.slow V6.

You know, about 10 years back Consumer Reports did a whole review on tire pressure gauges and I bought my two based off of that report. It is a company called Monkey Grip and if my old-man, fading memory serves I got them at Auto Zone. They work very well, and are easy to use. Cost about $10 last time I looked at buying a spare one. I keep one in each car and check the pressure at least once a month.


P.S. Salsa Red is an awesome color. Shines up nice and is not too loud a shade of red. And to think, I almost got a gray one.
