Tire pressure light

Hi everybody. I am new to Toyota's and this forum. I did search but I couldn't find the answer to this question- How do I turn off the tire pressure light? I have a 2005 4 runner Sr5

When it first came on, I was at a higher altitude so on the way back from vacation I put some air in the tires. They are all at spec. The light went off for maybe 5 miles, but then it came back on and has been on since. My friend has a TC and he has a switch in his glovebox to reset this light.

Its really finicky in the cold weather. Make sure your tires are all aired up and make sure you air up the spare too.
 
really...the spare? Can you explain to me how the tire pressure light works? Where is the device that reads the lack of pressure?

The tire light comes on when the tires go below 27psi. In the cold it starts flipping out and sometimes never goes out regardless of tire pressure. Just get under your car next time you air up your tires and inflate it like you would any other tire.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm not sure that you can turn off the TPMS. Just keep your tires properly inflated, including your spare, just like eschimochaos said.

Most people here seem to agree that keeping your tires over-inflated improves the ride and handling, as well as the fuel economy. The manual recoimmends 32 psi. I keep my tires at 36 psi.

As a side note... What effect the altitude would have on the pressure INSIDE the tire :confused:

I can understand that colder temperatures at higher altitude may lower the tire pressure, but that would only improve once you get to the lower altitudes and temperature rises.

So many variables it's hard to know. In a lab temperature would be controlled. I would suspect that the focus would become the elasticity of the tire. Assuming no elasticity then the pressure should stay the same. In the real world I suspect due to a bit of elasticity and lower temps as you go higher I suspect the pressure would drop minimally.

Truth is I don't know that to be true but that's my guess. It's an interesting brain teaser:D

Thanks for help man and for the link to Boyle's law, lol. I filled the tires up when I was still at the higher elevation and again when I got back home. I'll fill up the spare though. Thanks guys

CJ3Flyr Let's conduct the experiment, and I agree to use my T4R as a subject.

I will drive my truck to the higher elevation, taking readings of ambient temperature, ambient pressure, and pressure inside the tires. I will also take a pressure reading from the spare as it is not affected by the temperature increase from the contact with road surface and can be used as "control".

I will drive my truck for several hundred miles, for example, the distance from Central NJ to Mt Tremblant, Canada. The experiment will last 1 week.

I will regularly update the forum on the findings and will report back when the experiment is completed. The results also be submitted for consideration to the Journal of Natural Science, National Geographic, and Skiing Magazine.

So, since I will do ALL the hard work of driving, taking measurements, and skiing Mt Tremblant if the experiment schedule will allow, I will only ask this forum to sponsor me.

Is anyone interested in becoming a sponsor? :biggrin2:
