tire pressure question

ocd? tire question.

I was driving on the highway and it felt like my tires were over inflated. quick, erratic. I plan on doing the "chalk test" but was wondering what others are running with similar setups.

setup:

1999 4runner 2wd
full tank
new: balljoints, tierodends, alignment
17" 5th gen wheel and tire 265/70

36 psi all around

What kind of tire? P-metric? AT/MT? Load rating?

265/75R16 E rated Yokohama G003 Geolandar MT

I've never owned E rated tires before and C load isn't offered in this size.
currently running 35psi front and 30 rear.
 
You should be running at 32 psi. If you look at the sticker on the inside of your driver door you should see one that lists the PSI for each tire. Drop down to 32 and see how it feels
 
Stock pressures then - 30-32 PSI for max comfort. Higher like you are currently will be a bit better for handling at the expense of comfort.

The lowest pressure LT tires are rated for is 35psi. C and E load rated tires have the same load capacity at 35psi, which is much higher than we need on a 3rd gen... Also, at light loads, there have been safety tests as low as 22psi with no permanent damage or blow-outs at light loads. So, 22 minimum for highway safety. 35 is probably a good place to start until you do a 'chalk test'

I run 35 PSI on the street, 20-22psi for high speed offroading (like, up to 70mph fire roads doing rally safety vehicle duties) and lower for lower speeds (and more comfort) off road. This is on LRC BFG K02s.

What about low range trail stuff. Can I treat the E tire like a C and air down to 8-10 psi ?

I'll try 32 psi but the door specifies my original 15" wheels with the original 10% smaller overall diameter compared to now.

does the change from 225/75r15 32psi translate to 32psi on 265/70r17?
 
Switching sizes or from P to LT can get complicated, and the door label is no longer the best way to go.

Original tire (P225/75R15 SL 102) has a load capacity of 1797 pounds @ 32 psi. New tire (P265/70R17 SL 113) has load capacity of 2194 pounds @ 26 psi.
P265/70R17 tire has sufficient load capacity at its specified inflation level and can be used to replace P225/75R15 tire.
Even though new size (P265/70R17) has a much higher load capacity of 2194 lbs compared to the original tire's load capacity of 1797 lbs, it is not recommended to be inflated below 26 psi.

OEM 32psi
Tire Size P225/75R15 (SL 102)
Load Capacity 1797 lbs

New 26psi
P265/70R17 (SL 113)
Load Capacity 2194 lbs

Sticker on my door jamb, which specifies the size tires I run (265 70 16),
says 32 psi. I've found that's just about perfect for wearing evenly across
the whole tread width.

And I'm trying to make sense of this result from tirepressure.com:
Original tire (P265/70R16 SL 111) has a load capacity of 2326 pounds @ 32
psi. New tire (P265/70R16 SL 111) has load capacity of 2326 pounds @ 36 psi.

36 starts wearing the center off the tread pretty quick.

That's why I don't use sites like that. The tires will tell you the right pressure.

E tires are just stiffer/stronger/heavier than C tires - if anything you need to go lower than you would with an otherwise equivalent C load tire because the carcass will be stronger. At those pressures, you do need to be careful of losing a bead unless you have bead locks...

While the calculations might be good at 26psi, you might have worse fuel mileage. It will be a compromise of load handling, road manners, tread life, etc.

how did the tires tell you the right pressure? chalk? or after time?
 
If the pressure is wrong, the tire tread will start to wear unevenly. Too low,
and the sides wear faster than the center, too high and the center wears faster.
I've had both happen when I wasn't paying close enough attention. It doesn't
take a lot of miles, looked like maybe a few hundred on pavement.
 
I'm at 27psi for 265/75r16 e Mackey Thompson baja boss at. If it's bone stock, door jam pressure, everything else, chalk test.
