tire pressure..

Hey all,
My LT 265 75R16 Procomp AT tires on my 97 runner is telling me to inflate them to 80LBS. I cannot find a compressor that will give me that kind of pressure. The best i can manage is 70LBS and that is at a mavis tire center, they have a outside tire compressor- that is until the animals around here find a way to break it or steal it.. I forgot to mention that my tires are a load range E

is 80lbs too much?

Are you going by the tire's sidewall???? 80 psi is WAAAAAY too much :wow2:

Go by the tag inside the door jamb--Toyota recommends 32 psi for the 265/70 16s.

80 psi is to get the maximum load rating. Since they are load range E, 80 psi will give them the maximum "carrying capacity" weight-wise. If you're not towing, run them around 32 or so for a nice ride. If you want a little better mileage, I would run them at about 45-50 psi. I doubt you will ever need to air them to 80 psi.

Just because a tire says the max pressure on the sidewall is X, that doesn't mean that it should be inflated to that level. The idea is to have the correct psi for the load or weight of the vehicle that causes the tire to hold it's shape correctly while driving. Over-inflation and under-inflation can both cause bad tire wear. You might also recall the whole firestone/ford explorer(if i remember correctly) problems, that was a problem with Ford not specifying a high enough psi for the tires(think it was like 26psi) and tire blowouts resulting. It can also affect the handling of the vehicle, the tire will get hard and "bouncy" from too much pressure and might also track road grooves. My 3rd gen recommends 32 psi, I ran 34 a few times to try and eek out some extra mpg, but I really didn't notice much of a gain, maybe 1/2 a mpg. I saw more mpg gain by dropping my speed from 80 to ~60ish and getting off the main interstates I did notice a slight change in roughness.
