If you know what tire brand and model you will eventually want to replace the Dunflops with, then buy one of those for now as your spare. Then you will have a matched set later. The 4 tire rotation in the meantime will use up the Flops faster, which is a good thing.
Similar thing happened to me a few months after I got my SR5. I had a bolt stuck in the left rear tire. The mechanic at the Firestone shop said they could not plug nor vulcanize the hole properly because it was right on the shoulder of the tire which flexes. I had to buy a new tire as the puncture started turning/traveling into an actual tear.Same thing happened to my friend's '00. But instead of buying 4 new tires, she just bought 1 new one (which replaced the damaged right rear) and used the unused spare for the left rear, and then kept the old worn left rear (but still usable) as the "new" spare.
i would agree if the puncture is near the side wall, that most tire places will not try a plug since you have compromised the tire.
As for a full replacement since it's a 4WD, not to sure I agree with that.
Net most of the time you will be in 2WD, unless you have a V8 I didn't see what engine you have. I would replace two tires, the one that has the problem and the one that is across from it on the other side. You mention that you have 27K on your tires, again the other thing to ask is how much tread you have left on the 3 tires that are OK and are two of them close.
You could also opt for all 4 if you do alot of off roading as you will then be more concerned about tread depth and design being all the same.
