Tire question

I'm looking at replacing the tires on my '01 4Runner.

I'm thinking about the Toyo "Open Country" AT, as I've heard good things abut them.
Anybody have these and what are your likes/dislikes?

Other recommendations are OK too, but please try not to confuse me too much.



I want something with a little more aggressive tread pattern than what I've got now but not a real noisy tire.
I don't really off-road it (2-wheel drive) but I almost got stuck awhile back at Glamis sand dunes in a 20' x 20' FLAT patch of soft sand and that is just NOT COOL, so I want something with decent traction/flotation in the sand.

I'm also thinking about going to a little taller tire, from a 245/75R/16 to a 265/75R/16. I think it's works out to about a 1" height increase and about 3/4" width increase.

How much effect will this have on my gearing, mileage, handling, and low-end acceleration? If I'm going to lose 1-2 MPG, that's OK but if I'm going to lose 3-4 I'll just stick with the same size.

I occasionally tow a small trailer with one or two ATC's on it, total trailer weight probably not over 1200-1400 lbs.

The Nitto Terra Grapplers are pretty popular. I would definitely go with the 265/75/16. They look much better than that smaller tire.
 
i have them and so far there awsome in snow and sand pit sand. no complaints at all i have a 4 wheel drive with lift so mine are 285 75 16's but there great. clemson had mentioned nittos. there about the same from what ive seen. the wierd part that i was told when i went to buy them is that nitto and toyo are the same company one is the parent company. toyo has 50,000 mileage and road hazzard type garauntee whereas nitto doesnt have any. just ask to make sure that is the case where ever you are getting them. post pics if you get them.:) \

im not to sure on the sizes for a 2 wheel drive tho. sorry
 
Go tirerack.com and look at their reviews. Sounds like you're looking for an A/T tire.

I've ran quite a few and I really like the Firestone Destination AT. The info on tirerack shows it right up there with the Michelin LTX A/T2 and it's a lot cheaper. I have over 25,000 miles on my Destination AT's and they appear to have at least that much more left. They've outperformed the Michelin LTX M/S and the Bridgestone REVO's that I've ran previously.
 
Toyo Open Country AT's

I am currently running Toyo Open Country AT's in a 265/70/16. I have had them on since around the spring and summer of 2006. I replaced them 2 at a time. I am horrible at rotating them, I think they have only been rotated 2-3 times, but the tread wear has been great. I have put somewhere around 50K-60K miles on them and I still have about 3/32 - 4/32 of tread left on them. I will probably be replacing them this fall. These tires are pretty quiet on the highway, the only time I notice the tire noise in when taking corners or under moderate braking, then the tread on the shoulders tend to bite a little more, thus making a little more noise. These tires require very little weights on the wheels to get them balanced. I have had them off road in rocks and mud and they have not failed to perform. I know that these tires are cheaper than the Nitto's. For example, right now on www.tire-easy.com the Toyo's are $112 each and the Nitto's are $135 each. That is close to $100 difference for a set.

I would not hesitate to go with these tires again. This is what I will be replacing the current set with in the fall. Hope this helps.
 
I am running cooper discoverer atr's and they are incredible. terrific wet road/snowy road and light off road performance. 265/70/16
 
mickey thompson atz amazing tire. ive been through sand, dirt, mud, snow, ice and everything in between and the tires have proven themselves worthy to me.
 
I look for something that is still very solid on the street since you are still 2wd and paying through the nose for BFGs when you are only going to see mild off road conditions is way overkill. Toyos are a bit more price friendly like the Nittos which they are closely related.

I think you might try the Yokoham AT-S which is a very good on-road tire but isn't too tame to handle an occasional trip in the rough stuff.

When I went up an inch to the 265/75 TGs I noticed a very slight reduction in acceleration and a 1mpg drop and your speedo under 50mph will still read pretty accurate but as your speed increases up to 75 you'll be reading 3mph less than actual so the diff is not really an issue.

I definitely agree on the price of the BFGs, Even though i have a 4wd, i dont plan to ever take mine off road. I bought the BFGs solely on their agressive look.
 
I have ran a set of the toyo open country a/t's on a (shhhh) Ford supercrew Was very impressed with the quiet and smooth ride they offered for a much bigger and heavier truck also look into Hercules Terra Trac similar to the BFG A/T Had a set of those on a (here we go again, shhhh) Chevy s10 blazer ZR2 They were a little harsher in cornering than the toyo but cheaper than the toyo's also. If I remember right the Terra Trac was a 50 to 55k tire and toyo are 60 to 65k tire.

x2. Agree 100%. I would also add Michelin LTX series (M/S, A/T-2) if price is not a problem. I also have heard many good things with the less aggressive Yokohama Geolander H/T-S...relatively cheap and high quality!

HAHA! well, i have other toys for offroading. My runner is too nice to mess up offroading. Here in TN you have LOTS of mud, you get it in your engine bay and undercarriage, its never coming clean again. not to mention the tight trails that get overgrown with brush in the summer, scratching your paint.

Do you know if a 265/75R/16 will fit on a stock '01 SR5 without rubbing?

I could swear 265/70/R16 is the largest you can go without rubbage....... thats one thing that I'm not clear on, I hear different from so many people. Then again, when I did get my 265/70/16's, I noticed the end of my mudflap (the top mounting part) looks like it was rubbed...


well this should answer once and for all.

265/70/16 or 265/75/16?!!!

if it's 75 im gonna be pissed lol... just got new tires.

I hate to break the news to you, but it is 265/75/16.

What kind of tires did you go with?
