Tire recommendation?

So, after toiling over the mountain of threads regarding "good" tires, I'm still coming up confused. I don't have $1,000 to drop on them, so that kind of eliminates the Colorado favorite, BFG AT KO's.

I do *some* offroading, but nothing "extreme" (as in, deep water crossings, mudding...unless it rains while we're back there, or rock crawling). I still need something reasonably offroad capable though.

I do drive in the mountains in the winter. I am the type to not be discouraged by a winter storm to get my turns in, no matter how slow I have to go to get there. I also drive it in the city almost daily, with some highway driving as well.

I think the Yoko Geolander AT-S, or Toyo Open Country (though sort of at my limit for price) might be a good way to go, but I'm willing to get other recommendations!

If I buy them from somewhere online (also open to recommendations), will a place like Big O still mount them for me and warranty the work or offer free rotations and such?

I have the Yoko AT/S and love them. (great: road manners, quiet, wear well, snowy roads, snowy trails, rock crawling traction, price, balance, They are better than the BFG ATs in all but one aspect, aggressive looks. Most of the guys that I wheel with run different types of MTs, which I would never recommend for snow. The MTs have a slight advantage on some obstacles. The great road manners of the ATs way out weigh the slight advantage for me. They are wearing great too. I have had them siped which will help any tire out in snow and ice. Even with the siping they aren't too torn up from 20+ days wheeling in Moab. I also have had zero sidewall damage from rocks.

Like I already said, The Yoko AT/S don't have an aggressive look, mainly the sidewalls.

What size are you thinking about?
My lift is 3.5" Front and 4.5" rear and I'm running 265/75-16. Again, I wheel guys that run 285 or 305 and do the same lines. I did feel some power loss but nothing bad (no I didn't re-gear, stock 4.10, nor will I). And yes you can run that size with stock suspension with minimal rubbing, same amount as when lifted.

I buy from Discount Tire. They will match and sometimes beat T-rack (price + shipping). They also offer road hazard warranty. They sipe too.

You should look into Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10. I payed close to $550 out the door for 265/70/16 at discount tire. I have close to 12k on them haven't shown any wear. Dont know about off roading bcuz my T4R is 2wd.

You could look into the duratracks. From current reviews they are really giving the BFG AT KO a run for their money. Could be the best bang for you buck.

General Grapplers are another one to consider.

Nitto's and Toyo's are my favorite right now for all terrain tires. They seem to really be gaining popularity as well with Jeeps and other SUV owners in the area here (which you may take as a good or bad thing haha).

The Nitto Terra Grapplers are quite a bit cheaper than the BFG KO's but are better in performance. The rubber compound is even similar.

I've only had the terra grapplers since December, but have gone on 3 long trips through Baja (all over 1000 miles round trip) which included 200+ miles of rough dirt roads with sharp rocks. I've also gone on 2 recreational wheeling trips to the desert. Not to mention drive 60 miles to work everyday.

Haven't got a flat yet (knock on wood), and I don't recall ever loosing traction, even on some of the hardest of trails. (I just did a good trail this weekend, had them at 15psi and they were close to the MTR's in performance).

I echo much of Gerdo's comments - I have run Yokohama AT/S on my '99 Land Cruiser which has a 2" lift. I'm running the 285/75/16 and I take them off-road for hunting and fishing, often over some very rocky areas. They have held up very, very well - I'm approaching 50K miles. I will say that they have begun cupping a few months back, it will be time for a new set soon.

I can't say I've had them in snow a lot, but some, and they were fine.

The size I run are a load range D and have a fairly still sidewall. The 100-series Land Cruiser uses torsion bars up front so I don't know if my firm/stiff ride is due to one or the other...or both.

I would buy them again. Hope that helps.

I haven't personally used these tires but I know people who do and they love them, I've already decided on them as my next set. I believe they come with a 50K tread warranty too.

I'm coming from always running MTs so I can't give much help with ATs.

If you're in CO you can't do much better than the Geolander AT-S. I had that tire on my Tacoma (in 235/85/16) and it was great in the snow. Did decently in desert areas, too. They're competitively priced at Discount Tire.

I just put a set of Hankook Dyna-Pro AT-Ms (in 265/75/16) on my 4runner. I'd heard good things about them. My OTD price was about $750 at Discount, which I regard as pretty decent. I priced BFG AT KOs and even if I went to the skinnier 235/85, it would have been closer to $875 OTD. 265/75s would have run me nearly $1,000, which is insane. I haven't even had them for a week yet but I'll let you all know how well they do after I go to Crested Butte this weekend.

2nd the Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10

aside from having one tire out of round from the get go ive been able to use these on and off road in snow and rain and they have performed great. Get the 265/75/16. I bought mine from big O

If you want the BFG AT KO's get them.. Rubber is one thing you should never skimp on. Rubber gloves, Condoms, Tires, etc....

Hard to say without a price range. "Not $1000" isnt very descriptive. I like both the NTG and Duratracs. Both extremely good tires.

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll price out the Geolander and see when I can score the best deal and just go for it. I agree on trying not to skimp on rubber (and literally lol'd at the condom comment).

Anyone in the front range have a recommendation for a shop to go to for them?
