Tire rotation?

I need some help, and this isn't the typical rotation question. I've searched and read in various threads about the rotation methods, but unsure how I should do mine based on the wear. My rear tires are probably at 90% tread. My fronts are at ~50%, maybe less. I'm unsure on the spare, so I probably will not rotate it in. Where is the best place to put the worn tires? I'm thinking just the front to back rotation, but I'm not sure which end wears fastest on my rig (03 v8 4x4). Any suggestions on how (or should I) rotate my tires? Also, is it just a matter of swapping the location of wheels and all, or will I need to take it to a shop to have the tires only moved? Thanks!

Unless it's a directional tire I say don't worry about swapping sides. I like cross rotating them.


In your case, (due to the very good rears and the ok fronts) I would shoot for the following order regardless of where the tire was:
1) The best treaded tire on the right front. It hits the potholes and puddles the most. It clears a path for the right rear so RR doesn't hydroplane.
2) 2nd best tire on the left front. It'll clear the way for the left rear.
3) 3rd best on the right rear. The differentials inherent characteristics give the right wheel a bit more juice than the left rear wheel.
4) The left rear should get the tire with the least tread. It gets the least power and does the least 'work' IMHO.

That makes sense to me, and is really what I was thinking (not as far as the side, but moving front to rear). So, I've got no problem doing all this myself the way it sounds. I've always thought they dismounted the tires and then rotated, mounted, and balanced. I've got Bridgestone Dueler H/T's, not sure if they're directional or not (don' think so). I've also been told that you wan the worse tires on the back, because if you have a blowout and it's on the rear you can still steer, but if it's on the front you're more likely to loose control Thanks a lot!
