Tire Situation

Got a flat the other night on my 4runner, changed the tire on the side of the road and brought it in to the local tire shop. They inspected it and said it was not repairable as the sidewall had "ripped". I asked the guy if he could tell if it was punctured or if an object had caused it, and he said he didn't think so, and had not seen damage like that before.

Several Qs:
The truck has about 20k on it, with the OEM tires (Mitchlin Cross Terrain 265/60R18). Is there any Warranty on the tires ripping like that? Any similar stories? I do deflate the tires to drive on the beach often, but have never done any serious offroading.

If I the tire is not covered, I don't want to buy another Cross Terrain. They are very pricey and don't perform well in deep snow. I am looking at the new Revos. However I don't want to buy all new tires as I have quite a bit of life in the stock ones. So would it make sense to buy 1 Revo and keep it as my spare, then when I upgrade in a year or so, buy 3 more Revos and keep the best OEM tire as the spare? How long do tires usually stay on the mkt before they change? I don't want the Revo 3 to come out in 12-18 mo and be SOL in getting 3 more.

Seems like that should be covered. If you bought your 4Runner new, there should be a tire warranty card inside your owners manual pouch. I would check with the dealer first, beats buying a new tire.

Not a bad plan... I seriously doubt there'll be a REVO3 for several years. They seem to run production longer than that, 3-5years maybe (at least). The only exception would be if a tire had a specific problem with design. I, personally, would bet that Bridgestone has the REVO2 sorted out well enough that it's not going to change in the immediate future.


Overall the CT's are good and your story is a bit of an anomolly. The only thing is the remaining 4 are likely to last a good long while. You may be throwing away tires w/ some good miles left. What I am trying to say is expect wear out of the CT's and it may be a while until you need to buy the next 3 REVOs. Your desire/need for a better snow tire might push you to purchase sooner, IDK.

The warranty should cover it though... I wouldn't fess up to airing down.
