Tire Size Question

This may be stupid, and asked a million times, but I've been searching and haven't found anything yet. Ok, here goes...

I just bought an 00 T4R SR5 about 4 months ago. However, the wheels on it I have not seen on any other 4R so far. They are 5 spoke, but instead of coming straight out of the center they are angled, like the typical sawblade style of wheels. It does have a "TOYOTA" center cap on it, so I assume that they're not aftermarket. I also beleive them to be some sort of unpolished aluminum, but I don't know for sure. On these wheels, there are some BFG 265/70R16 tires mounted. The spare appears never to have been used, and is a Goodyear 265/70R16 also.

My question comes when I look at the Toyota sticker in my driver's door sill. On that tag, it says "15x7" wheels, with 225/75R15 tires. Which one am I supposed to follow when looking for replacements? Did Toyota make 4R's with 15's? And did the previous owner just straight up get the completly wrong tire for that wheel?

Any input at all is greatly appreciated!

Also, if I have confused any of you, tomorrow I can get a digicam and post a pic of one of the wheels/tires, and a pic of the door tag.

Toyota does make 15inch rims. But since your lucky and have the 16inch stay with the 265/70/16 tires. No need to go back to regular size.....

OK, I can deal with that. Now my question is... Was there a difference in the computer/tranny for models with 15s instead of 16s, so that the speedometer would be correct from the factory? Using the miata.net tire size calculator, there would be a 5mph difference between them. Coming out straight from the factory with a speedo that's always 5mph off doesn't sound like Toyota quality to me... ;-)

Well... The door sticker days your 4Runner came with 15inch wheels. My guess is, its calibrated for that size. But for some reason you have 16inch wheels with bigger tire.

If you have the V6 engine I say stick with the 265/70/16 setup. Other its iffy if you have the 4cyl.

Do you have a picture of your wheels and tires? Im curious what it looks like?

I do not have a picture of them right now, but sometime this weekend I could get one taken. I found out that they are 16's form a Toyota Tundra. :-S How they ended up on my car is beyond me. Does anyone know how Toyota "calibrates" your tire size to match your speedo? Is it actually programmed into the computer, or is it maybe just a jumper/plug in module of some sort?

Go with the +1 size and beef up the look with a set of 265/75/16s.

The Truck may have come from the factory with a set of 225/75R15 wheels and tires. The first owner may have asked for an upgrade at the time of purchase. There is no way you could get a 265/70/16 tire, 16 being the rim height in inches, to fit on a 15" rim. Look at the 5mph difference this way. You are going 5mph faster than the speedo reads at 60mph. You may see this as a good or bad thing. As long as you are aware of it it is not a big deal. You are racking up 8.2% less miles on the odometer. So when you look to resell it it will look like it has less miles. This is where the bad comes in. If the truck has 50k miles on it and the speedo was never correct for the tire size the truck accually has 54100 miles on it, 100k would be 108200 miles, but your drivetrain only turned enough times to travel 50k or 100k miles according to the odometer. Confusing huh. Anyway If that was an optional tire/wheel combo from the factory then I would assume Toyota could update the computer to adjust to the larger tire size. I would stick with the bigger tire because it sure looks better on the truck than the smaller ones. Hope this helps
