Tire size?

I just bought a 99 4Runner that needs tires. The sticker on the door pillar says 225/75R/15 but it is running 265/70R/16 on Toyota rims. Can anyone tell me what size was originally on it? Any thoughts as to 70R/16 vs 75R/16?
This will be a daily driver.

Well if the door says 225 then that's what it had.

You can run as large as a 265/75/16.

im running 256/75/17 on oem wheels and i have no issues whatsoever according to GPS my speedo is off 10% 40=44 60=66 80=88 and so on IMO not too bad

I think dealers would often upgrade rims and tires once they got to the sales lots. You probably have the 15" style rotors/calipers like me too (which suck). My door sticker says P225/75R15 too, but it came with 265/70R16s on stock rims when I bought it. Get 265/75R16s, they won't rub on your '99 and they'll make it look a lot tougher too. Mine is a DD also and I'm running 285/75s (you need lift for that though).

Yes, your car originally came with 15" rims which is why the sticker indicates the tire size you mention.

If you have 16" rims now, either 265/70/16 or 265/75/16 will work. If this is a DD and you won't be doing any off-roading and gas mileage is your biggest concern, there is no reason to go with the bigger 265/75 tires.

Dude, this post is all sort of messed up...

Did you mean 265/75/16 on stock wheels? The other size you listed just doesn't make any sense at all.

Gypsy, I have the same deal. My 4Runner is a base model and it came with 225/75/15 too. I have since gone through 4 sets of wheels and tires. Right now I'm running 265/70/17, which is about equivalent to 265/75/16.

The tires did rub on my 99 a lot when I got them, but I do not have the tall coils. I did some trimming and it's alright. I strongly suggest getting the larger tires. The only thing that sucks is that your speedo will be very off. Mine is 11.7% off, so me going 60 on my speedo really means I'm going 67.

Try that tire calculator, input 225/75/15 as your Stock Tire, and then input whatever you want for the next size.

Why do you strongly suggest getting larger tires? It's a daily driver. The OP didn't mention off roading. Bigger tires cost more, are heavier, will make your speedo slightly inaccurate, might cause a small loss in gas mileage and depending upon your vehicle might require some trimming to fit.

Keep in mind, this is coming from someone who has 265/75s They look cool, and that's what it's all about, right?

Gypsy, perhaps you can tell us some more about your intended use for the vehicle and we can offer some better suggestions.

Wow dude, that comment sure seemed aimed straight at me. Jesus, I'm so sick of people just bashing on me thinking I'm all about looks. I just put in a bit of my own opinion, and last time I checked, we're all entitled to that. I suggested them because I much prefer them over stock. Yes, they look good, but they perform well too. I try to do mostly function with form added.

But no, people see a 4 banger 2wd hunk of shit, assume I'd prefer 22s over mudders, or that I don't know shit about my car. What's wrong with something looking good, you think that if I want to offroad, my truck has to look like shit? I think not. How do I know the guy doesn't wanna offroad, seems like that's all that goes down here anyways. ****, he likes big tires, he asked about them, I ****ing answered. I have the bigger tires, I like them, they perform well on and offroad (yes, my piece of shit useless thing of a sport utility vehicle HAS touched dirt, more often than you might think) so I think that these tires outperform stock size. They provide more ground clearance for those who can't get a lift and they LOOK damned sexy doing it.

Do you think just because I have a lesser equipped truck that you're better than me? You'd be sadly mistaken.

COB - you took that completely the wrong way! No offense intended to you. I was just trying to be helpful to the OP and asking that you clarify *WHY* you recommend the bigger tire.

In fact that is how I closed my post, asking them to provide us more information so that we could get better recommendations.

My comment about them looking cool was actually said very matter-of-factly. I bought bigger tires for my 4R largely because I just simply think they look better. That being said, if it was my daily driver and gas mileage and cost was my main concern, there is no need to upsize.

bah sorry. I knew in the back of my head that it was nothing. Stress and troubles. My uncle had a really cool 92 4x4 Toyota pickup. Last night, he got hit by a stupid teenager who was speeding in his Integra, flipped 3 times, and he passed away. My dad who is overseas is not doing great and my mom is freaking out. I wasn't too close to him but I've been having a really rough time because of it. Family kinda got torn apart lately and I'm just not in a great mood. People love to bash me because of my grille too (which I still can't afford to replace yet)

It is to my understanding that the Limited only came with 265/70/16, so it would make no sense for it to say 225. Clemson is right.

The SR5 came with both tires, 265 was only an option. It would make more sense if all SR5's said 225 in the door jamb but that still sounds like it wouldn't be right.

I bought 245R75 16 load range C. They are, for all practicle purposes the same diameter and about 3/4 of an inch narrower. They ride slightly stiffer than the worn out 265R70 16 tires that came off. An alignment was also done.
I also changed the right side half shaft due to a torn boot.

What tire would be recommended for a 99 4Runner SR5 2WD that will be used strictly for daily city driving, never any off-road? Want something quiet and also good in rain. Door pillar says 225 75 R15 but I've seen posts recommending a larger tire and saying that some of the 99's came with larger tires. It has aftermarket 15" wheels on it.

Best All Around Tire Size for 1996 SR5 4Runner

Just recently purchased a 96 SR5 and have been slowly building it up form stock. The truck needed tires badly so I went for a set of used rims and tires off a '19 4 Runner. 265/70/17's

About to upgrade my suspension to the 5100/OME 2" lift. Would like to put the optimal all purpose tire on it. Any recommendations? Exp. Overland mentioned a 235/85/16 for their build. I just want what would be best for the Swiss army of vehicles, the 4runner. Was thinking 265/70/17 BFG KO2's or 245/75/17 KO2's.

Im planning to drive the vehicle to Costa Rica come this December. So trying to get ready for that adventure. I welcome anyone to join!

Does that mean all the 4runners sold with the optional 16" wheels had speedometers that were off straight from the factory? Or maybe Toyota had a different speedo setup for each of the two wheel sizes?

If I'm understanding correctly, the 15" rims translated to a 28" wheel while the 16" would be almost a 31" which is a fairly sizeable difference IMO.

my sticker on the door panel says P225/75R15, even though it came with p265/70r16 rims and tires. my original window sticker lists the larger rims and tires as part of an optional equipment package. (upgrade value package #4)
i could be wrong, but i dont think the dealer changed the rims and tires because there were too many other things in the option package that i dont think the dealer would have fooled with-
