What is the best way to store tires? what would be the optimal temperature? standing up or laying down? is there anything to treat them for longevity so the rubber dose not dry rot or crack? inside or outside? humid or dry air?

IMHO the most important thing is keep them out of the sunlight and keep them round. I don't know that standing or laying down matters much provided they aren't stacked more than 4-5 high and if standing they aren't supporting weight beyond thier own. In other words don't pile stuff on top of the tires however you position them.


Excessively dry air probably isn't good and would think excessively cold wouldn't be good either. In the NE I'd put them in my basement and not give it a second thought.


Prior to storing them I wouldn't apply tire shine or anything but I would clean them. I'd get a bucket of soapy water and the hose, clean them up and store'em. Why? To get rid of any nasty chemicals you may have run through prior to storing them and they'll be cleaner to handle.


That's just me making stuff up. Does Tirerack have a 'guide to tire storage' or similar?

ozone and uv are the major contributors to tire degradation. keeping them bagged in the basement would be ideal.

Many years ago, I built a rack on one wall of my utility shed to store my extra sets of tires. It is a simple length of pipe with wall standoffs, suspended from the roof with chain. On it, I can store three full sets of spare tires so they don't take up valuable floor space. This allows me to store the tires out of the sunlight. I am not worried about the cold weather, since the active set spends all winter out in the cold.

Those are all GREAT means to store your tires. I think that any and all will be of benefit to you.

BUT.....remember that the "time" clock is ticking, and tire degrade over time regardless of being used or not. I would not recommend putting old tires back on and trust them "just because" there is a good deal of tread left.

Just be careful.
