Tire upgrade for stock 98 sr5, suggestions of best/largest?

I have some 35" tires already on wheels that my friend gave me and I posted in the offroad section about that and the idea of putting them on my 98 sr5 and what would be necessary to do so.
What I want to know here is, what is the largest size tire that can fit on my stock 98 sr5 without modifications? I basically want the beefed up look along with the performance for occasional offroading. Anyone have any ideas of what tires would be good for that? any pics of stock 4runners with bigger/better tires would be appreciated. Thanks

largest on stock is 265/75/16s... and even then in some cases people experience minor rubbing on full locking turn.

to go up to 285's (33's), you have to lift 2.5".

i have a 96 limited with BFG a/t's 265 75 16's and yes they do rub on full lock. sucks, but hey what can you do

i just got new BFG A/T kumos and the size was metric but was equivalent to about a 31.5 - 32 inch tire, i dont have any rubbing whatsoever and i have the same model/year as you. I love the tires and their great with traction and handling. Here comes the crappy part, since its the SR5 edition, toyota made bigger wheels for the 4wheel drive i guess. The average wheel size on SUV's is 15 inches, but on yours its 16 inches, it doesnt seem like a big deal but it is in price. The tire(if you go with the BFG) ends up stepping up to a D load range tire( tougher, rougher, and built for work) i didnt notice a change in ride but maybe others do. Anyways, my final cost with install was around $800, i figure its $800 well spent though.

I had a set of Yokohama Geolandars (50k mileage warranty too)and they did the job on my '97 on and off-road and Discount Tire has 'em on sale for $500 out the door for 265/75/16s.

I'm considering another set of Yoks but know I'm seriously considering a set of Nitto TerraGrapplers which will be about $100 more.
