tire upgrade help

i have a really good deal for 5 brand new 265/75-16 bfg at's off of a 2011 TT FJ cruiser. ($800 for all 5, ~150miles on em)

the stock size i have os the 265/70-16

i know they will most likely fit.

i dont plan on lifting this 4 runner just yet, if at all.

i recently got out of a 2010 TT fj myself and must say that the decrease in power i saw from putting on 305/70-16's was a slight turn off. the cruise was worse and the mileage to boot. even at only 3.7% off in size.

i will see a similar increase at 3.5% speedo difference with the 1" larger 75-15 as compared to the 70-16.......

i am DD'ing the 4runner for sales job now and really like the 19-20 mpg that i am getting (was getting 14-15.3 in the FJ)

do you guys think that it will affect the performance much?

i do mild of road only now and am not into rock crawling any more.......

i just dont want to see such a sharp decline in performance as i did when i upgraded the tires on the FJ, seeing as how the engines are almost identical, i wanted your thoughts........

or, should i just get them because the deal is sweet. i can have all 5 of these for LESS than i will pay for 4 of the 265/70-16's

Anyone have an opinion?

Basically what I want to know is will getting 265/75-16's as opposed to the factory 265/70-16's have much of an impact on power and gas mileage.

Really wanted to know if anyone has done the same. Search is not turning up much (that I can find) in regards to the size in question.

The change from 265/70s to 265/75s isn't going to be as drastic as 265/70s to 305s. But there will be a noticeable difference due to height, especially depending on how aggressive the tread you choose is compared to the stock tread.

While the height increase is about the same, the width increase is over an inch. The width increases rolling resistance as much if not more than height.

A lot of members here run 255/75R17s (or 255/80R16) which are actually taller than 265/70R17 (or 265/75R16) and get the same or better mileage as stock 265/65R17s (or 265/70R16).


I lost about .75-1.25 mpg upgrading to LT265/70R17 BFG ATs, but based on others' numbers I think it would be slightly less had I gone with P265/70R17 less aggressive ATs (like Dueler Revos, Hankook ATMs, or GY Silent Armors).

edit: btw the reason the search isn't doing great is likely because most 4th gen members have 17" wheels so it may work better if you try the 17" wheel/tires sizes (at least for comparison) I used above.

even tho its only 1 in., some guys will say they do notice a difference, others will say they feel no differnce. imo, even if theres is a slight one, as long as the weight is close to the same, its not really noticable . now if u changed the load, weight & go from a highway tire to an AT, thats a different story. the first time i changed i went from P 265/65/17 to P265/70/17 & the only thing i noticed was how much better a tire it was from the stock brand. depending on brand the 265/75/16 are about 31.7, so the size difference is similar to my 17s. ur speedo will be off by about 2 mph when ur over 60, so take that into account when u calculate mileage. ur previous change on the fj was over a 2 in. difference. so i say get em & dont worry.

i like the deal, but think i will pass.

for now, it suits me to stay with a stock size i think, although it is hard to pass on such a great deal.

it wasnt 2" iirc on the FJ, which is what worries me. it was almost the same jump in percentages, and that's why i am a little gun shy.

in the FJ went fron 265/75-16 to a 305/70-16

and the jump in question is 265/70-16 to 265/75-16 on 4 runner

hell, maybe the fj is just that much more of a **** due to aerodynamics (believable for sure) and has a hard time making good with the same engine.....there is also the gearing. i havent looked into them to compare, and frankly, have not really worried it to that extent.....

gotta add another question.

have any of you put this size tire on without lift? do you think they will fit?

ive examinied and although it looks a little close, i think they should fit. i did that tire upgrade on teh FJ without a lift, when everyone said it wouldnt work......so......

that would be my 2nd main reason. i would likely put a front spacer on if needed, but wanted to keep everything close to stock as possible. i always end up lifting and changing the supension of all my vehicles and wind up missing the stock ride........

Can anyone help me with this one question. Maybe it got lost in the garble I posted above.

Will a 265/75-16 Fit without spacers? It sure feels like there is a knob like end on the uca that will probably be a tight fit.

There are a few people running BFG ATs, you'd probably find more info if you search for 265/70R17.

BFG ATs, from what I've read, are about the only 265/75 that will slightly rub with no lift because of the square shoulders. Wheel spacers make the problem worse.

I don't think anything will rub on your CAs but possibly the mud flap or fender flare.

i am really only worried about the knob that i feel on teh control arm. it is already less than 1/2'' away from the oe michelin that is on the truck.

i plan on some other mods later, but have grown less fond of lift the more i age.

lower is always best and ill sacrifice a inner fender or a plastic flare for lower COG any day of the week.......

ive avoided the 17" wheel/tire response and threads because i want to compare exact set ups.....
