Tire upgrades

My 07 4runner is creeping up on 3 months old, 2800 miles. I'm thinking about changing my tires while I can still get a high trade in price. I was thinking about getting Revo's but i'm not sure. I live in Southern California and Snowboard on the weekends if that helps give an ide of what kind of driving I will use the tires for. Does anyone have any suggestions, and reasons for your suggestions, on the tires I should upgrade to?

I'm also planning on getting a 2/1 cornfed lift soon so I want tires that look a little beefier than stock. Thanks guys.

If I lived in the climate of So Cal, I'd get the Michelin Cross Terrains and nothing else.

You'll be 99% of the time on hot hwys and roads and the 1% of the time you might run into snow on the mountain roads, the 4 x 4 capabilities of the 4Runner will more than suffice.

Now if you lived in the mtns all the time, and/or you still want beefier tires, that's another thing. The Revos, Geolander ATS's and other AT type tires would probably do fine.
 
Well I go up to places like mammoth and Tahoe quite a bit, so I'm in deep snow 10-15 times a year. And it's funny that you lived in SoCal because I'm planning on moving to Colorado with my girlfriend. I was thinking about Boulder but now it will probably be Denver so she has all of her Louis Vuitton and Chanel stores. .:help:

I am up in Tahoe every weekend when the resorts open, so i my choice was based on the info below.

I had my stock dunlops for 2 seasons in tahoe and just changed them out with the Nitto Terra Grapplers. I recieved a $20 per tire trade in from americas tire with 28k miles on the dunlops. Total price installed was around $600

In all, the dunlops were not terrible in the snow, if all you will be doing is driving in mild conditions ( i do not recomend driving on them in tahoe during near white-out conditions which most riders will do). However, after two seasons, i was very tired of the uneasy feel i would get while driving in rain or snow covered or icy roads. The tires have lost traction on several occasions. Last season i got a concussion on the slopes and a mild case of snow blindness with the dialated pupils, so my wife had to drive home. I never thought i could me more nervous in the snow in my runner.

This is what i based my decision on. I knew that i could get away with a non-agressive A/T tire, but i did not want to have to worry if someone else had to drive my truck home. I wanted to ensure i had much better traction. I havent had a chance to test them in the snow, but i can tell you that the Nitto's are incredibly better with wet traction than the dunlops. Oh and they look great.
 
Michelin LTX AT2.....not very aggressive but a very good tire.....

BFGoodrich AT.......slightly more aggressive but a much stronger tire......
 
I'm kinda leaning towards the BF Goodrich AT. I think it will look better with the 2/1 lift i'm going to get.
 
cant go wrong with the BFG AT/KO. Those were the tires i was going with initially but the price wasnt right at the time. After i bought my Nittos they ran a special on the BFG, and they were only a little more than the Nittos. In all i love the Nittos and probably wouldnt change as i like the ride better than my buddies 05 SE with the BFG
 
What do the Nittos look like? I want something a bit beefier than my dunlops, especially when I get the lift. They will look sad haha.

Hurry up on the trade in you want to get the most back you can. Alaskaman just got a decent price on a set of Pirelli Scorpion ATR at americas tire. He has good things to say about them. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31460&highlight=pirelli+scorpion

265/70/17 will provide you with a big selection and will go well with your lift. Nokian Vatiiva is a good tire with the tread to get you through the snow. Check out the review by jcal.

The AT KO's are good at first, but reports indicate when they wear, they are miserable in the rain and snow.

I would look into the Goodyear Silent Armor AT. They are also designated sever snow rated with the mountain snowflake insignia.

Nothing looks better than a BFG AT , but as they wear the ride rough and wet traction suffers and so does the ride.

:iagree: I got Cross Terrains as stock tires and I haven't had any problems with them last season heading up to the snow. Had very little trouble on an ice covered sloped driveway (three car lengths long about 10' difference from the top of the driveway to the street), truck did slide a few inches as I tried to back out from a spot perpendicular to the driveway (had to make a 90* degree turn). A few occasions I was driving much faster than I should with an inch or two of snow. My friend kept me in check asking me to slow down, but mentioned how damn stable 4WD and Cross Terrains are compared to his car and chains. I've driven in chain control areas once in an Odyssey. It wasn't snowing and I didn't notice any difference compared to normal driving other than a lot slower and a helluva lot more noise from the chains. The Odyssey had Michelins too (I think Energy MXV4).

On a side note, glad to see some Cali members who are snow enthuaists too. I'll be at Northstar. :)

For an A/T tire on a daily driver they are hard to beat with solid off road manners,very well behaved in anything wet,good dry grip (might wear a little faster for this grip) and the price is nice.
 
I love those nitto's. I have the revos and really wish i would have gotten the terra grapplers instead.
