Tire upsizing 05 4Runner Sport 285s?

I am sure this has been covered and I have scanned through some posts, but not found my exact question.

I have a 2005 4runner sport 4WD V6. I am wondering:

1. What is the biggest/widest/tallest tire i can put on without modifying anything and have a decent ride? I was thinking like 265/70/17, 275/60/17 or 285/60/17?

2. What is the easiest/cheapest way to lift it 1" and then can I put the 285s on? What are the negative effects of this?(gas mileage, speedometer off)

I am not worried about the spare, I figure if I got a flat, it should work with the stock size for a few miles.

I think the biggest you can go is 265/70 R17. If you decide to move up to 285 size tires, you need to have a 3" lift (cornfed, revtek, daystar) and wheel spacers or a body lift to clear with minor trimming.
