Tire wear question??

I put new tires on the 4R at 133k. It's now at 156k and I'm late on the rotation. Today I noticed what I would call feathering on the inside of the front two tires.

My last set of Continentals cupped horribly and I tossed them at 52k as it was so loud.

The front end has no shake and doesn't pull. What could be up??

I should add it's never been aligned but it's tracking so good I wouldn't think it needs it.

You could have perfect alignment and still have tire wear, a good rotation pattern helps ease it out.

That said. Your camber could be off? Or, it could simply be wear on a tire that turns the car.

If it hasn't cupped, try a round of rotation on it. Also, if you have NEVER had it aligned, might not be a bad 50-70 bucks to get it done.

Also. Cupping can be caused be a. crappy tires or b. suspension stress. At 156, maybe you need to replace your shocks and struts on the ole beast?

Technically you should be aligning the vehicle everytime you get new tires... has to do with differences in tire material, shape, suspension wear and other crap...

That being said, feathering on the inside edge of your tires indicates toe-in/out issues. If it is wearing faster on one side than the other and that's what is making you think it is feather, it is probably a camber issue, though most Toyotas seem to wear faster on the outside edge on average.

UPDATE

Took the 4R in this AM, had the tires rotated and front end aligned. According to the computer print out with all the green and red numbers I had one setting out of spec.

Front toe (right tire) was at -0.05* and was corrected to -0.01*. (not bad for 156k and never aligned)

My question, would that be enough to cause the problem?

I wouldn't dream of answering for Blackworks but .04 adjustment was not worth paying for IMHO. The rotation shouls be kept on a routine schedule.

I would certainly agree but I did need to know just where it all was.

I rotate my tires every 5000 miles when I change the oil. Keeps the wear even. But I do align with every new set of tires as well.

I agree with CXS on that, .04 of a degree is very small and I doubt would cause serious tire wear in a short amount of time. How severe is the feathering?

You can just start to see it, and just feel it with your hand. I typically rotate at 7500 miles, looks like every 5k with the oil change will be the new procedure going forward.

And BTW, the aligment ran $79.95...
