Tire/Wheel dilemma w/UCA Help please

I have a 2002 Sport Edition with a Toytec Ultimate lift on 5 spoke "sport" rims with Yokohama Geolandars P265/70R16. I'm looking for a more capable off-road mud/snow tire. I could tell by looking at the current set-up that UCA clearance would be an issue with a bigger/wider tire.

I can get a good deal on Kelly Safari TSR's 285's from my local "discount tire" shop but they are not sure on what wheel will clear the UCA. We tried a nice looking Konig rim on the front but it was obvious there would be an issue, and I checked Craigslist for LC or Lexus rims with no luck.

If you folks have any suggestions for tire/rim choices with part numbers I would appreciate it. For this kind of money I would like to get it right and if I have to buy spacers will stay with the stock wheels. Thank you.

You'll need a lift to fit 285s without rubbing a lot - not only on the UCA, but the firewall mainly. If you do go to a bigger/wider tire like a 285/75/16, you can keep your stock wheels and just run wheel spacers. If you want nice ones, get some 1.25" AllPro hubcentric spacers. If you want to save money, all you need to clear 285s on your UCAs is some .25" slide-on spacers like the ones wheelersoffroad.com sells for ~$6. I'd link you to that, but wheeleroffroad's site is a piece of crap and doesn't load usually for me. I'd just call them.

Just so you know, steel wheels will suck about as much power and mpgs as going from 31s to 33s will.

Hmmm? Another dilemma. This vehicle is no longer a DD but an extra to be used occationally for commuting and weekend fun runs. Are there lighter 16 in. wheels w/4 in. backspacing avaliable?

I will still have the stock set-up if needed.

FYI: Dan from Wheeler's Offroad informed me shipping to the New England area would be approx. $165, that works out to $120 per wheel for the 16 inch HD powder coated steel rim w/4 inch set-back.

Any other Toyota wheels out there with a 4 inch set-back? Dan's wheel is a serious off-road wheel that would last me a lifetime, just looking for options. Thanks,

If you want to keep your power, go with aluminum/alloy wheels (or keep the stock wheels and run spacers).

I'm running 16X8 Procomp 1079's with a 4.5" Backspace (i think they discontinued them though, but still have the 4.25" backspace wheels)....they are Polished aluminum...don't weigh too much, and were pretty inexpensive....

I have the same setup as you with 285/75/16 cooper stt on my stock 5 spoke rim. No rub at all going straight. Only on full lock turns

Update, the boys at Tire Warehouse were able to come up with a wheel/tire combo that worked. 285 Kelly Surfari's on 4 inch backspace **** Cepek wheels. That gives me 1.5 inch clearance from the UCA to the tire tread, it would've been close with the 5.5 inch backset from the stock wheels

I see you're in MA too, what town? You ever go wheeling? I'd love to get out wheeling some time, just don't know anywhere to go.

BTW, you can get 1/4in wheel spacers at autozone, no need to pay shipping to get them from wheelers. Here in MA they are all going to trust up anyway.

Hey Nelson, Right now I go out locally with friends, mostly Jeeper's on fire roads and private land. There are some New England wheeling clubs but they tend to be dedicated hardcore wheeler's. not daily driving rigs.
