Tires and MPG

I am ready for new tires, but with gas prices not getting any better, I am a little concerned about going up a tire size. My stock tire size is the 265/65/17 and I was wanting to put the 265/70/17 on. I have read some post saying they noticed a loss in MPG and power, and some post saying they didn't notice any changes.
So the question: How many of you that went with the 26/70/17 noticed a decrease in MPG or a loss in power? Or, did you not notice any changes?

I went with 265/70/17 Revos and noticed a loss of 1-2 MPG. I do drive faster than most people and quite a bit of highway.

I think A/T tires is more of an issue than just the size. So if you go with A/Ts expect a drop in MPG. Highway tires tend to be quiter and have less rolling resistance due to less agressive thread patterns.

I didn't notice a difference in power with the V8 though. Might notice it on a stopwatch, but in spirite driving it seems to be the same.

IM in the same boat Hunt Runner. I just barely sqeeze 20MPG out of my V-6. I really want the larger 265/70's , I like the look and the fact that its a easy 1 inch lift I would imagine the power loss is more apparent on the V-6 models. I know border411 has revos on his 6 er. Hopefully he will post up his impressions.

On paper it should be 1/2 inch, but by my measurements I got .7" with BFG KOs.

I can't tell how much of a hit I'm taking mileage-wise because I have yet to go a tank full with them without some significant off road time. I'm constantly happy I made the change, though.

I too like the look and height increase the larger tire gives but I am not sure the trade off is worth it right now?? Since you can get the Revo in either size, I just wanted to see how bad of a hit I would take if I went for the 265/70/17. Not to mention the extra cost of buying the spare.
I do have the v8 so I am glad to hear you have not noticed a power loss. Losing gas mileage though is a tough one. I tow a lot and don't really want to drop another 10%.

Whether you notice it or not, i can assure you that acceleration AND fuel economy are worst than stock size. In fact, ALL of your performance measures (acceleration, braking, handling) will be compromised a bit by the taller tire. There's no way around it. A taller tire will be worst than if you bought a fatter/wider tire. The only real benefits are: looks and off-road ability.

Some say that VSC, ABS, and auto tranny may be off a bit by the taller tire. I did not notice this on my 4runner when i upsize the tires, but i did notice it on my G500. Because of the taller tire, your tranny may be shifting slightly too early, your ABS may lag in reaction, and VSC may be too sensitive due to the taller sidewall. Again, these are possibilities...i am not sure if it applies to the 4runner or not. Like i said above, i did NOT notice this with my 4runner. You pay for having so much electronic nannies on board.

And, in addition, if you add on AT tire (esp. BFG AT KO, which are heavy tires), then expect slightly worst acceleration and fuel economy on top of what i said above.

IMO, i would stick with stock size and upgrade the tire from there.

Isnt it a rule of thumb that more surface area will create more rolling resistance and it all depends on the tread of the tire..??

Personlly, I wouldn't do it for any reason other than better off-road ability. The speedometer is off by 3 1/2 percent. The odometer is off by about 6%. (Maybe someone can explain that one.) Worse mileage is a given. I have no regrets regarding the road handling. The noise, while very noticeable, is reasonable IMO.
