Tires - Firestone Destination A/T's

I plan on replacing the Dunlop's on my 2007 Sport (after only 16,000 miles).... can't stand these tires.

I've seen lots of recommendations on this board for Revos, Pirelli Scorpions, etc.

But in researching online these Firestone Destination AT's have good reviews (better than the Revos), and are 20% or more less expensive.

I need a tire that will be good in mountain driving in the winter on roads that won't likely be well maintained or plowed, and will do well on forest service roads, primitive roads, etc.

Any one have thoughts or experience with these?

Funny, I just posted out on the General Forum about this for someone asking the same.

I put the Destination AT on my last truck (a Dodge Ram) mostly because of price - I was contemplating turning it in early, and knew they would screw me on the worn out Michelins it had. Turns out the tires were surprisingly good, especially at the price. They seemed to be well-balanced and didn't require a lot of weights, which was something I've had issues with on Dunlops in the past. They were quiet for the moderately aggressive tread. I did notice that dry traction wasn't as good, but the snow and ice traction was great. My guess is this was due to the aggressive tread and probably harder rubber compound in the Destinations.

Overall, I was very happy.

After doing much homework I chose Destination A/T's in 265/70/17 and have been extremely happy with them. They're very quiet, ride well, get good mileage and have shown minimal wear. I do alot of highway driving and they've never hydroplaned in the wet. That's a pretty good endorsement here in Florida. I've also put about 400 miles off-road, gravel and dirt fire roads, dirt trails, wet grassy fields, streams and they've never let me down. Excellent choice, you'll like them.

Good choice on the tires , I should have went that way too simply because of cost of the Revos and my lease coming to an end.

There are a lot of good AT tires out there that are brand name and off names that work very well.

I bought a set of Armstrong tires (all season) for a 1981 rear wheel drive Monte Carlo that I had. I ordered them from my friends local hardware store who had the on his Cutlass and loved them , they were to this day the best all season tire I've ever had in rain and snow. It was unreal.

In the past I have run Michelin LTX, Bridgestone REVO's and Firestone Destination LT's and AT's (plus a few others) and for the bang-for-the-buck, my vote goes to the Destination AT's. I currently have them on my '00 SR5 with about 25,000 miles on them and they look as if they'll easily go another 25,000. They're as good if not better in deep snow than any of the others I mentioned. If I wouldn't screw up my odometer on my '08 Sport, I'd swap the Destination AT's with the crap Dunlop Grantrek AT20's.

I've had the Destination A/T's for 3 weeks now. Driving in heavy snow conditions is awesome! You can't go wrong for the price. I highly recommend.

TR has some good reviews for what they are worth . I see alot of different AT's around here and more and more of the Destination AT's . I usually try to ask their opinion on them , never heard anything bad , even from the snow plowers. Good tire IMO , maybe something seriously to consider in the future.

If I wouldn't screw up my odometer on my '08 Sport, I'd swap the Destination AT's with the crap Dunlop Grantrek AT20's.

When compared to GPS my Michelin CT equipped '07 under reports by 3% and the speedo is dead on. 265/70's would make the Odo and speedo a hair off but not by much... 4-5%. There is a speedo correction module available from Speedohealer. A guy at T120 has used it with success.

Myself, I'm partial to the BFG AT-KO's.
I had them on my Tacoma, and they were a great tire in the snow, which is a priority for me. Very rarely are you driving hard enough to challenge any modern tire on pavement, but in the winter, snow will often expose weaknesses.

The tires I have now are a good example; Currently she has P265/65R17 110S Yokohama Geolander A/T -S tires on, and while these tires are rated very highly by Consumer Reports & others, my own personal experience is that they suck in comparison to the BFG AT KO's I had on my Tacoma. The open, aggressive tread pattern on the BFG's is hard to match.

By next winter, I'll have the BFG's on her, even though I'll have to go to LT265/65R17/E, which is as close as they make to the factory recommended size for the 4Runner. Yes, I know, it won't ride as smooth, but that's ok. This thing rides a little too isolated for my tastes anyway.

I think the hardest part will be getting them balanced properly. many shops don't have the equipment for doing it right on tires this big.

That should not be a problem at all , these tires are not big. WOW"E" rated that will be a pretty rough ride I would think .

BFG AT is a great tire. I have had many many set's and the are tough as nails.

If you want a great tire get the Goodyear Fortera TripleTred ... looks good, and it handles, rides, wears fantastic... excellent tire !

Bought my Destination A/T couple months ago replacing my original OEM Bridgestone 840s with the same size. I'm no expert on the subject of tires but I saw a huge difference in performance between the 2. The Destination have been tested in rain and a couple inches of snow. No more hydroplaning and better grip. Lost 1 mpg but whats that compared to feeling more confident. Brought the truck on the highway and had her up to 80 mph and not one vibration. The only difference is the vehicle feels more truck like, which I prefer. BTW Running 36 psi.

The tires are awesome. Good traction in the snowy mountains of SoCal. The tires handle well in the rain. White letters mounted on the inside. I would buy them again.

I'm sure they would be great, i have the destination M\T's 265\70\17 and they are awesome and look mean....One of my friends has them on his 08 FJ too, he loves them as well. I had discount tire get them from tire rack for me so i can have a warranty on them in town and they even priced matched them for $184\tire. good luck

My friend has a 2005 Tundra with Destination ATs in a 285 and they are awesome tires. I plan on putting some 265/75/16 Destination ATs on after my lift comes in a week or two. They get great reviews, and my friend never gets stuck in anything, although we really don't mess with nasty mud. As far as a trail tire with a nice smooth highway ride, the Destination has been more than adequate for everyone I've known that has owned them.

Does anyone have photos of their truck with Destination A/T's in 265/70/17 on an SR5 at stock height? I'm trying to figure out how much more they'll fill out the wheelwell and if it's too much rubber.

Attached is a pic of my truck with A/T's... plenty of room as long as your not doing any climbing. Occasional front rub entering steep angled driveways. I plan to get a lift some day to kind of give it a better look.

I have had these tires on my '05 SE for about 4 years now(only my second set of tires on my 4runner). I have put over 45k miles on them and I still have about 5-10k left on them. I have used them in moderate offroad situations as well as deep snow and ice. I have never had any issues with them and would highly recomened them! GREAT TIRE!!!!

Specialized - Thanks for posting. I've been wanting to see stock height with black letters out Dest. A/Ts. I think it looks good how it is but a small lift wouldn't hurt I suppose. Great looking set up. Do you have the P rated tire or a E load range? I think I asked that right. Thanks.
