Tires for a 4th Gen

As many of you guys know NE is getting hit by a major snow storm. As I figured earlier I am coming to the tail end on my tires. I have the Pirreli Scorpion ATRs which I purchased in 2013. I had the Pirellis prior which lasted for approx 5 years. I expected the tires to last longer but I have done 60k miles on them at least. Not sure if buying the cheaper one or the more expensive one makes a difference?

Secondly I also was thinking the BF Goodwrich AT KO2s which on tirerack are the #1 rated tires.

My driving consists of weekend trips from Baltimore to NYC every weekend. My job requires me to come in rain, snow, and ice. I will be going down to FL for work after the summer for about a year. I want something that would be amazing in the snow and the worst storms however moving to FL I won't need that same level capability and diversity in a tire. I've enjoyed the Pirelli's a little hesitant to change brands but the BFG seem like a good choice. I drive a lot of miles and I want to make sure these tires last.

Also check out the Toyo Open Country AT2. They have a 65k mile warranty I believe and are rated very highly and won't cost you an arm and leg like the K02's.
 
I run Michelins MX2s year-round on my 04 sport here in the Colorado mountains. And Have for the last twenty years. But If I have to get out in much more than a foot of snow I'll chain up the the 93 which has more aggressive tires anyway.
 
I am running Cooper AT3.... Quiet on the highway and great in the snow... No noticeable penalty in gas mileage.... Worth a look...
 
I run the General AT2 for the snowflake rating (allows me to avoid chains in the passes in ca and or.

If i lived somewhere that didnt require snowflake or chains I'd get the Cooper At3.

Fwiw, tirebuyer.com has decent prices and discount tire will match them in my experience.
 
I just put Firestone Destination A/Ts on my truck and they did quite well in this recent snow event. Quiet and well mannered on dry roads, too.

They don't stop you to see if they have a snowflake. If it's 4wd they just wave you by.

Sometimes. In Oregon, even with 4wd they sometimes require traction tires (defined as studded or snowflake symbol tires) or chains. And I have had mine checked, even with 4wd.

California is a bit more relaxed.

And you said ca :). I've never had them look at my tires. They always just wave me without ever glancing. On 80 at least.

I said CA and OR. In CA, you are right, on I80 they generally wave you through. I did have them stop and talk to me one during a really bad storm, but they did not physically check. Still, if you get pulled over, a cop will check. (Happened to me in Oregon when I had a taillight out. )
 
What are your feelings about chains? Online there are a lot of people who say if you have a 4wd then there is no point in getting chains. However the until I get new tires it may be worthwhile to try.

different tires P vs. LT E

Looks like the LT E rated tire would add about 35 to 40lbs in weight but the passenger tires are for a car. You might consider something in the middle like the LT C rated duratrac if you want to do everything.

Do 4th gen 4runners come with passenger tires? What do they rec for replacements?
 
Michlein LTX M/S 2's. Unrel. Also, they sidewall in the stock size is bigger than any other tire and soaks bumps up much much better...
 
I just loading toyo open country at2 285/70/17 on my 4runner. So far noise and ride have been great. Added 1.25 spacers and a little bumper trim with utility knife.

Also week before I added four 5100 shocks and Moog FJ springs. Looks 10x better.
 
My '06 Ltd came with a brand new set of Yokahama Geolandars when I bought it last year. I've put about 7k miles on them from dirt roads and snow to long highway miles and I couldn't be happier. Great traction in mud and snow, quiet and well behaved - when they do go ill replace them with the same.
