Hi I am a newbee. Cheers to this post!

I've got an '88 with a 22re, 5 speed.

I bought the tuck a few months ago with studded tire - excellent now vehicle. Studded tires need to come off now in Oregon so I am pondering new tires.

A slew of questions:

1) I can fit 31s with no lift correct? What's the biggest tire size I can run with no rubbing?

2) What is the best way to improve the ride and get rid of the rear end sag without a lift kit? Add a leafs in back?

3) If I put on 31's, should I re-gear to keep decent power? What gears would you suggest? Will I need to beef up the drive shaft?

Im no expert on this subject but I will answer your questions based on my own reading and use of the "search" button on the forum menu bar, you might also like to try searching, this subject is pretty popular.

anyways,

1) Yes 31's will fit without a lift
Im not sure if you can get 32's on there
33's require a 3-4 inch lift I believe.

2) I think your best bet to get rid of the rear end sag is to buy new springs to correct the problem. You could find examples of this fix on the forums somewhere if you search suspension or rear end sag through the seach button.

3) I dont believe you need to do anything to your gears and driveshaft with only 31's, I think you only need to worry about that when you get up past 33's.

but since Im a newer member to the forums please dont take my reponse as definite answers although Im pretty sure they are mostly correct, if not Im sure I will be corrected promtly.

My advice to you though is to sit down and read by clicking on that search button and type in whatever you want to learn about, this forum is a wealth of knowledge if you take the time to search through previous posts. All of what you're asking has been discussed.

Add A Leafs will help with the rear sag, but typically result in a harsher ride.

No need to regear for 31's.

x2 on no regear with 31s. im goign to run 33s on stock gearing. people on here have run 35s on stock gearing. and depeding on sag, 31s will definatly fit and was offerred as a option for factory.

add a leaf will make your ride harsh. maybe try some lift shackles. LCE makes 2" lift shackles for 60 bucks.

One other thought:

If I re-gear to 4.56 for 31s what kind of affect can I expect when I put my studded snow tires back on in winter.? They are only 235/75/15.

I'd rather not have to buy new snows too. I am hoping I'll have a little extra power for driving up the mountains to snowboard. Currently 55 is my max speed for driving up steep hills. (270,000 miles on the engine).

Hey Jake,

I noticed you also live in Calgary, you probably do alot of your work in your runner yourself but are there any 4x4 shops around town that you'd recommend to buy from and service my 4runner?
not oil changes and easy stuff like that but I eventually want to get an ARB bull bar and stuff like that

i've noticed i bit of rubbing with one set of 31s i have (very minimal, only at full crank) and hardly any with another set of 31s with a bigger offset on the rims.
for rear sag you could replace the rear leafs, i was looking at skyjackers "softride" leafs and getting 2in over stock. they run around 150$ which isnt bad at all.

are there any local toyota 4x4 clubs or websites? im from edmonton. I was in banff/louise/cochraine last weekend.. took my 4runner off road for the first time, it was great. I would love to meet people that actualy know of trails and whatnot around the mountains
