Tires (no off-road)

which tires should I get??

2001 4Runner SR5 2WD
155K miles

I drive about 50 miles round trip per day, mostly highway.

I don't do any off-roading and I live in CT, so winters can be rough.

I'll most likely just go to Town Fair tire, but I'd like to know what tire would be best for my situation.

I currently have Yokohama Geolanders.

wildcat xtx are good i have them and they work great off roading so im sure theyd be great on highways too, i drive over the pass all the time in the snow. supposed to last 50k
 
I'd say BFG A/T's. They work great on road for anything. Rain, snow, dry, doesn't matter. They give great traction and they have great tread wear too on roads. I think they have a life of over 40,xxx and with good care can reach 60,xxx

If you are driving 50 miles I would not go with the BFG A/T's. They are a bit overkill for so much driving. They are also not that great in the rain.

The Michelin LTX M/S2 are really great tire for getting long life and good MPG but I don't know how they are in the snow.

Why not go with the ones your have? The Yokohama Geolanders get really good reviews. I was very happy with them when I had them on my Taco.
 
Right now it's between the Michelin LTX M/S or another set of Geolanders. I'll also see what else they have to offer to Town Fair...
 
I love my geolander AT S tires. Ride great on the highway, good in the wet and can off road just fine if need be..
 
Michelin LTX M/S 2. My dad has them on his 3rd gen in the stock 265/70 size. Had them for almost 2 years and haven't lost very much tread at all. They handle great in light snow that you'll find on highways. Great off road traction if needed. Not to great for offroading in deep snow.

They aren't cheap, but they could last twice as long as a cheaper tire. I put 70k miles on a set of the original version LTX M/S tires, and replaced them at that point due to age. They still had usable tread left. The newer LTX M/S2 version, is supposedly even better.

They did great in rain, snow, and were very quiet on the road. The only fourwheeling I avoided with them, was mud-bogging. Light mud was never a problem.

Another good all-season tire is the Toyo Open Country H/T.

I wouldn't get an all-terrain tire for strictly on-road use, unless you just like the looks of an A/T, and are willing to accept the compromises of an A/T tire. An A/T tire will generally wear faster than an all-season, and have more rolling resistance (poorer MPG) and generate more noise due to the more aggressive tread.
 
i love my marsh mellow man LTX M/S tires. i spent about 900 for all 4, (shipping was a B) they kick butt in the rain! Missouri we get some pretty nasty rain thunderstorms and that's the best with these tires! now i am in Idaho and we are expected to get 2-4 inches of snow tonight, they handle very good in that amount of snow, almost like it hadn't even snowed. a month ago we got 8 inches with drifts of 16 inches/ 2 ft. these tires are more of a highway tire and do not have much a bite in that much of snow because the cut of the tire. (4WD was needed) currently i have 275/75-16 (i think) i drove the 1400 miles from Missouri to Idaho in jan. and these tires are very smooth/quiet on the road. Expect them to last a very long time. (ive gottn 100K out of my last Michelin AT2 tires and the cross terrains)
bottom line, expect to pay more but expect a great ride.

My dad also has them on his 97 and said they are great for all weather and highway...

I do like the look of an A/T tire, but I do absolutely no off-roading...

It seems that the Michelin LTX M/S2 would be the top choice (what is the difference between the M/S and the M/S2?)

If the Michelin and Geolander are close in price, which is better? Or even the Toyo...
 
I've got hankook dynapro ht tires for my everyday driving and they are awesome! Great gas mileage, extremely quiet, and great road manors in the rain and snow. i believe they are a 60k mileage tire too. Sears has them for about $118 a tire in the 265/75/16 flavor. Slightly more for the stock 265/70/16
 
On my first 4Runner I had the BFG MT's and tried the Michelin's for two days also had the Big O XT's not too bad Now I have the Handcook Dynapro MT's, The best tire I have owned, My brother got the all terrane and they are a very good tire, they are rated at 70K but if you monotor your tire pressure you should be able to get close to 100K Great tire lots of seeping for snow and still have a 3ply side wall for less tire flex when driving at high speeds.. I had the Michelin's for two days once and when I cornered hard I felt like my 4runner was going to roll..:zoom:
Oh and he paid around $800 I think..
 
I found my receipt from last time I bought tires...

I've put about 70K miles on them so far...

From looking online they seem to be about $60-$70 cheaper per tire than the Michelins....
