Tires: Revos vs. Michelin vs. Yoko

I'm considering either the Michelin AT2 or the Pirelli ATR. They're about the same price. Anyone have any experience or comments on the Pirellis?

They rate well on Tirerack (for what it's worth), the flat-spotting is a non-issue for me here in coastal CA, and seems like a not-to-aggressive tread for everyday road use. I've not heard bad things about them just not many rave reviews from users. Seems not many folks have actually tried them.

I actually had Pirelli Scorpion's on my Cherokee years ago. I think I had the A/T's but I don't remember. They were ok, but I agree with you the ATR do look sweet, hadn't considered those!!!

Just when I thought I made my decision....BOOM. So I decided I was going to get the YOKO's, just from a review standpoint and $$$. So I go to order them tonight and they don't come in white letters in 265/65/17. I know, I know, but I love the white letters and it is a deal breaker for me.

So I am back to Michelin's or Revo's or I guess I could go up a size. If I had to choose now, I think I might go for the Michelin's and see what happens.

Alright, we finally have a conclusion to the new tire dilimea!! I just got off the phone and ordered 4 new Bridgestone REVO's!!!

I went through everything with this and for others I thought I would document my thoughts:

- Even though I really liked the look and price of GY SA, I didn't feel comfortable going up sizes. I know many have successfully done it, but I couldn't do it. (Have had bad experiences on that in the past with my Jeep). If I would have gone up a size, these would have been the winners.

- The upsizing deal also elimiated Nitto's, BFG KO's, and General Grabbers. Like all but if I was going up a size, I would have done the GY SA's as I liked the technology and look.

- I really liked the Yoko's, in fact I was all set to order when I found that they were blackwell only for this size (265/65/17). I know, but as I have said before I love the white letters.

- That left me with Rugged Trails, Michelin LTX A/T 2 and Revo's. The Rugged Trails were just too poorly rated and although I like BFG's in general, I really only like the KO's. Then the Michelin's....nice tire, great tread life, but man oh man they are just too plain looking for me. I know they are supposed to be great, wonderful, best A/T available, but in my opinion they are a highway tire not a A/T tire. So I just couldn't do it. I like tires way too much to walk out to my 4Runner and see those tires everyday.

Therefore, I ordered my Revo's and hope to get them installed this weekend!!! Thanks for all your help!!! I love this forum!!!

:iagree: This above post could have been written by me, as this is the same thing I've found out. I don't want to change sizes either!

So my decision will come down to the Revos or the Mickys. If I can get a good enough deal on the Revos, I just might go with them again - although I would perhaps like to try the Mickys out first, to see if they have as good a pavement & wet traction as the Revos.

I agree as well. I will likely go with the Revos. I am not too enthusiastic about getting a bigger size. I am not a fan of Michelins in general given past experience - and that whole French ownership thing.

I will probably go through with it in the next couple of weeks before it gets too stupidly cold. Just wish that Toyota would have allowed for a more common size of the tire.

The way my luch is, I'll screw up the truck, Toyota won't cover the warranty, and it'll cost me a bloody fortune.

Might as well not press my luck ya know.

alaskaman, tough choice. I looked at all those tires in my search and off those I liked the GY SA and REVO's the best.

It is a tough choice, not nearly as easy as one might think that is for show!!!

Im getting the Yokohoma's put on on the 8th, 31's. I can't wait this will be the first pair of tires i have bought since I got my truck last summer. Just in time for the snow too! Im looking forward to ripping past everyone stuck on the backroads in my 4runner it will be tons of fun. Plus I think the YOKO's will perform pretty well year round, so I can keep it real.. Feedback on these tires is much appreciated, i'll post back as soon as I have mine on.

What past experiences have you had that turned you off Michelin? I'm a fan because of the last 25+ years with no problems or concerns. I'm not a Mich employee but I am kind of in the business and am curious to know what went wrong.

I had a set of LTX A/Ts on my Pick-up (full-sized 1998 GMC) and the tires seemed to have horrible traction. They consistently slipped in the rain, I slid a lot in the snow in both 2 & 4 wheel drive, the ABS system engaged frequently with them in moderate braking because of the poor traction.

They looked good, and I bought them off of the recommendations of Tire Rack (in part) and just never saw them live up to their expectations. They were at least better than that crap BFG Long Trails that were on the truck OME - those things sucked after about 15,000 miles.

I had Michelins (not sure of the model) on my '07 Highlander and they were decent tires, but seemed to wear a bit faster than I had expected a set of Michelins to wear - especially when you have a 40,000 mile warranty on them. We put about 8,000 miles on it a year and while they gave a nice ride (as I expected for a car-based SUV) I expected better out of them.

Then again, I should know better than to expect much use out of OME tires in general.

I have had excellent results with Yokohama tires (Avid Tourings) though. Drove - LITERALLY - through a hurricane in Florida with torrential rains and never once did I have even a shudder from the front of the car when we hit standing water.

You just get biased based upon experiences. My wife loves the BFG AT K/Os but I won't put them on my truck. We thoroughly enjoyed them and beat the crap out of them on her '86 Jeep Cherokee when we were dating and those were impressive tires. Just won't put French-owned tires on my truck.

It is a give and take for me.

Why does this NOT surprise me?!

The previous LTX AT version was a durable tire, but never got much attention nor much award for it's traction capability. I had them on my old 4runner...while it was OK, nothing really stood out. Therefore, i would not based too much on that experience alone.

I posted that to substantiate your claim of Tire Rack as the Pre-eminent tire source.

I also based it off of Michelin's reputation.

I was nto looking for an off-road tire then, just a good tire to get me around, give me off-road capabilities when needed, and get me around the snow without any issues. At the time I was a call firefighter too and needed a good tire but did not exactly get what I was expecting.

I see it as tires are the only thing that keeps me on the road and I need the best tires for my wife's and my own safety. I do not compromise on that. I doubt that I will go back to Michelin as I do not see a whole lot of improvement in the grand scheme of things.

Not necessarily made in France - just that Michelin is headquartered in France. They also own BF Goodrich and (I hear) Uniroyal.

I have this absolute distaste for France and will not give them my money - if I can absolutely avoid doing so. This is also why I will not purchase a Nissan - 44% of the company is owned by Renault (a French company) and 12% of the company Renault is directly owned by the French government.

Just me. Won't do it if I don't have to.

We'll just say that it generally delves into politics and that may be a third rail, so to speak, for some.

No different than me not buying oil from Citgo/Venezuela and other political decisions I make.

I had a set of LTX A/Ts on the former ride (GMC Jimmy) with 180,000 Km's on them. Never an issue in our snow or rain (except near the end but I didn't want to replace them because I knew I was replacing the truck.)
I would have gotten the LTX A/T^2 to try them out if it had come out slightly earlier because I just replaced the Doneflops with Cross Terrains earlier this year. No regrets for an excellent road tire.

Stay away from the Yoko Geolander

Yes i was in your shoes a few months back. I couldnt wait to get rid of my Dunlops and like you i was drawn to the low price of the Yoko's but now i acutally miss my Dunlops!! We had a lot of rain in Texas/Austin and i never fish tailed so much in my life. It was getting really embarassing at intersections. Thank god its stopped raining but now i dread the coming winter. If we have another Ice storm in Texas i'm really going to have to consider getting some better tires. I regret not going for the Perelli Scorpions. My advice is to spend the money and get a quality tire.
