Tires Rotated - Now Truck Vibrates...

Hey Guys,

I figured I'd check here before I call the dealership to complain...

I just got my tires rotated for the 20K service, and now the truck vibrates (mostly via the steering wheel) and pulls right when I am on the highway.

This is due to them not rotating the tires, right (EDIT: I meant to say "This is due to them not balancing the tires, right")? It did not happen before the truck was taken in for the maintenance.

I appreciate any input!

You said it wasn't vibrating before you took it in. If rotating the tires was part of the maintenance, then the probably DID rotate them since all of a sudden you're having vibration problems. If they DIDN'T rotate them, then nothing should have changed right?

Have they always rotated the tires when you take it in? Have they ever used the spare in the rotation? Maybe they used the spare and that had a different tread wear than your other tires and may possibley be causing the vibration. Just a guess

Is the spare even a Aluminum rim? I thought it was a full size steelie? :confused:

Page 5 says it's a full size spare mounted underneath the body.

Sorry I guess my first post wasn't clear.

They did rotate the tires.

I'm not sure if they were balanced, but there is definitely noticable vibration (& a significant pull to the right) now. The tires were last rotated about 5K miles ago.

So, is the answer then that the tires probably weren't balanced this time?
 
I had my tires rotated, and asked them not to balance them. The next day, on a road trip, I had shimmy in the front end. Tire shop re-balanced them, still shimmy, the original tire shop balanced again, concluding tires were out of round. Toyota dealer balanced with a 'finger' balancer, that pretty much eliminated the problem. Tires are Dunlop AT20's not great tires, but seem much better after I took the vehicle away from the tire shop.

Conclusion: ask if the shop has a finger balancer (rim bolts onto adapter that spins wheel as it would be when installed on vehicle).

Several things could have gone 'wrong'. If they followed the correct rotation method, they should have removed the spare and moved it to another position and put one of the other wheels in the spare position. I have found that quite often, the spare has a significant difference in air pressure than the others 4. It is also possible that the spare wasn't balanced properly to begin with. It is also possible that the 'mechanic' who did the rotation didn't torque the wheels properly when they were re-installed. If they were torqued with an air wrench, and were over tightened, they could be causing your problem.

Jungle Jim - First he said he got it rotated. Then he says he doesn't think they rotated it. What I think he meant was that he thought they didn't balance the tires. That may be the culprit. So thanks for being constructive and not offering any helpful advice :tongue:
 
Sorry! That was a typo. Sheesh, I feel like an idiot, lol.

Anyway, what I meant was, the tires were rotated but I think they were not balanced.

Even if they didn't balance the tires when they rotated them, that should not have made any big difference. Unless someone removed the wheel weights, there is no reason for a tire to go out of balance just because you take it off the vehicle and move it to another mounting position. If you didn't have any vibration issues before the rotation I still think you should be looking into if they rotated the spare to a front position. If it was out of balance, and the tire pressure was wrong, this would explain both of your problems ( vibration and pulling ). Also, I again suggest you check the lug nut torque on the wheels. If they overtorqued them, the rotors could have been warped and that would cause a vibration when braking.
 
Check air pressure on all tires first. And then just get them balanced. Whenever I rotate my tires, I always get them balanced at the sametime as a safety precaution so that might be a good idea.
