Tires to buy for 2002 Toyota 4Runner Limited (2x4)

I am asking this as someone who knows nothing about cars, tires, etc, and just doesn't want to get ripped off or talked into something excessive by the big chain tire companies.

I have a 2002 Toyota 4Runner - Limited (2WD) and was told I needed new tires. I'm fine getting new tires as I am about to go on a 900+ mile road trip. However, the tire company was trying to sell me on some All Terrain tires that were $200+ per tire. I'm not a fancy driver...my car only goes on the road to get me from one place to the other. Do I need an All Terrain tire?

So my question is, what is a good tire to get for my 2002 Toyota 4Runner Limited? Any suggestions appreciated! And just for more information, I currently live in Wyoming where it does snow and I put a studded snow tire on in the winter since I don't have 4WD. However, I am moving to southern California, so snow and weather won't be an issue. THANK YOU!

If you don't go off road and since your truck is 2wd, you definitely don't need an all terrain. I'd go with some decent all season or radial from a reputable brand like Michelin, goodyear, bf goodrich etc. Don't let em sucker you into buying something you don't need. For a 2wd that stays on the road, you don't need to spend anywhere near $800 for tires.

I'll second that
I have michelins on my 3rd gen that I paid like $ 124 at costco on sale 3 years back.
you are in Wyoming so I don't know if you are close to Walmart, costco, or Sam's Club look at the tire size and look at tire reviews on line and then look at online sites. depending on how soon your trip is. you can even order them online and and then get them swapped out at a local shop for couple of hundred bucks but if you buy them at a big box store your rotation and balancing is included in the price and they fix flats too.

i also have a 2wd and about a month ago put on a new set of Firestone LE2 tires.

i got them at my local Firestone store and i think when it was all said and done it was about $550 installed. assuming that you're running 265/75R16s, looks like they are $118 (at least for my zip code) or $640 installed... i got mine around President's Day weekend so i think they were running a promo that made my price cheaper installed and out the door.

granted ive only have them on just over a month but i've been happy with them so far. we had a lot of rain here recently, and i do modest off-road driving on fire roads, and they performed great so far.

on my previous 2 trucks, both 4x4 Tacomas i always put on all-terrain's so it was a little weird for me to by highway terrain tires on a "truck" but looking back i'm glad i did.

I did this thread a couple of years ago...I went with Toyo Open Country HRT, very happy with them. Nice and quiet.

Michelin LTX if money is no worry. I like the General Grabber HTS a lot though.
