ok. Enuf about tires! but whoa I see the news on the Goodyear Fortera Triple Thread and guess what. It is rated higher on wet/ice/snow than ANY other tire on tire rack...ANY other tire...so I read and I read and sure enough. People go gaga over this tire. Any one got a set on?

Goodyear Fortera seem pretty cool and aggressive. I would get them. Pricey tho.

I recently bought my Goodyear Wrangler R-T/S. I was all into General Grabbers AT2 but when i got to Discount Tires, they said we don't carry it, its only on order. Even though i called in for them before but did not place any order(thinking they should have them).

So the sales person said that they are having Sale on these tires(sales means that those tires are not selling ) but they also looked pretty cool. And i'am happy with them even after reading bad reviews about the tire. They hold pretty good in dry and Wet. Better than Firestone Wilderness i had before.

They were rated the best for snow and ice in the "Highway/All-Season Tires" category. Check out the "On-/Off-Road All Terrain" category (which many if not most of the readers here use) and you will find a few tires with better or equal snow and ice performance scores - at least as far as Tire Rack feedback goes.

I feel your pain. I nearly went blind when I started searching for tires. I had several questions, and many have been answered via pouring though the endless threads.

First I went up to the 265/70/17 from the stock 265/65/17. Believe it or not the bigger tires are cheaper. There are also many more options when you go up in size.

I was almost sold on the Revo's but it seems after reading a bunch of threads (and I know I'm going to hear some comments to the contrary) that the Revos isn't the best in snow. Being in Colorado, especially after last winter an above average snow tire is important to me.

I go off road a handful of times a year, and nothing too techincal. Mostly dirt road and trails, what ever leads me to the best fly fishing.

I settled on the Yohahama Geolander ATS. I got a great deal from discount, and have to say that they are really quiet. I haven't had them in the snow, but I'm headed up to the hills tomorrow for a little fly fishing and am eager to see how they do. Best part is the warranty. 50,000 Miles...that's what sold me. Hope they last, and do ok in the snow. This is my first tire that is not the famous BF. So we will see how it performs.

Two things to consider:

1 - Not every tire is rated on TireRack. They only provide ratings for the tires they sell. I bought a set of Cooper Discoverer ATRs for my 4Runner last fall, and they worked unbelievably well in snowy conditions last winter. Better than any other tire I have ever had. Unfortunately, TireRack doesn't sell those tires, so they don't have ratings on them

2- The TireRack ratings are the opinions of people who take the time to rate them. Of course you realize this can be extremely subjective, right? Take my opinion for example.....I told you that the Discoverer ATRs are the best tires ever in the snow, but you have no idea what I used for my basis of comparison.

Thanks. I agree on the way Tire Rack gives opinions but like Pilot Guy I must have read a hundred threads and I have appreciated your valuable input on the Coopers. They sound fantastic. For me, wet and snow safety is paramount and I would not get a tire that I could not depend upon. If I was in AK full time no doubt I would have the Blizzak. I think at this point due to the fact that I go to Tahoe and AK.

Here are my current choices for NON dedicated winter tires.

Geolander
Fortera
Cooper
Michelin Alpin

And yes, it is subjective and a coin toss. These tires are so competitive that it's a color choice.

TireRack reviews are unreliable...i would not trust them nor read too much into it. It is usually by people who want to justify their purchase.

Sometimes, Tirerack itself does official comparison between tires...i would trust that.

I would buy a tire that is proven.

After some issues a month ago at our tire dealer we were given a full set of Good Year Triple Treads (not the Fortera) for our Subaru Outback wagon.

Great tires, and they were very pricey - but overall I think we got a good deal for them after they screwed the pooch on us.

The treads are very similar. While I have been researching the tires myself I saw a 3rd gen T4R with the Fortera Triple Treads on them. Not much difference other than the size of them. Although I do imagine that tere are some ply and sidewall differences in them due to the LT rating.

We got some good pouring rain last week and my wife (who admittedly drives like a little old lady - though she is 28) has had no difficulties.

I guess it depends upon what you want.

I agree with Thai though, ya gotta balance everything. People's driving styles, biases, expectations, etc. You read the Tire Rack and Discount Tire surveys and people rip the tire because they ran over something in the road and the sidewall blew out. I mean come on people, a good hit to sidewall will shred a lot of tires.

Tough decisions when you are dropping $800+ on a set of 5 tires........

I agree with Thai on this. I always laugh when someone says that their new tires ride so much smoother than their old tires. New tires ARE SUPPOSED to ride better than old tires....they're new!! Plus, the old tires are usually, well, old and already served their useful service life. A pair of new cheapo tires are likely to feel nicer than and old set of expensive, brand name tires.

Also, what are all those Tire Rack people using as a basis for comparison? They rate their new tires against what? Who knows for sure? Most likely, they're rating them against their worn out old whateverbrand tires....

If you really want an honest tire comparison, look for comparison tests that put several different tires head to head in the same conditions on the same vehicle.

Wow...tell us what you really think of my opinion!! BTW, do you remember a few years ago, Bridgestone Dueler REVO was the top dog in it's category...Koz was jumping for joy. Where is it today?? It's like #3 or #4...is it really inferior to Pirelli Scorpions or whatever?? No. It just means that the newest products get the most attention and the most positive reviews because most reviews are right after the purchase.

I went with the GY Fortera Triple Treds 265/70/17and would not hesitate to buy them again, check sears' price they were the lowest around. My comparison is obviously to the stock Dunlops and to a set of Mich Cross Terrains that I had on my Explorer. The Mich were supposed to be great in the rain but I slide all over the place with them.

The GY do come with a high mileage warranty, compared to the Scorpions

When did anyone say that T4R members are the only ones that know tires?? Can you clarify this statement??

Do you know what is funny about TireRack consumer reviews?? If you notice, my Firestone Destination M/T is #1. The reviews are full of, "quietest tires ever," "even quieter than AT tires," "does great in rain, better than highway tires," etc.. Let me tell you, these "reviews" are NOT TRUE...not even close! If you want proof, then buy one and you will be laughing too! I bought my tires because i wanted to try something different from my brother who has BFG MT and Goodyear MT/R. Don't get me wrong, I love my tires, but these comments just make me laugh my ass off!

I trust TireRack actual comparisons between product A and product B. TireRack editors/authors do a real good job with the comparisons. I also look at various off-roading or car magazines who do similar comparisons. And occasionally, Consumer Reports use independent firm to do their comparisons.

TireRack consumer reviews need to be taken with a heavy grain of salt...like any consumer review, on here or anywhere. The real question is...are people who swear by the TireRack consumer reviews moronic & silly/arrogant for believing it and insulting others who don't share their views??

Oh yeah, this CLEARLY shows where TireRack consumer reviews are unreliable. Aren't most highway/all season tires better than off-road all-terrain tires in wet, snow, and ice?? The lone exceptions MAYBE are the snowflake all-terrain tires.

Talking about reviews...

When i was looking to get some new shoes for my truck. I read reviews all over internet, including TireRack.

Well, in TireRack, people praised the Firestone Wilderness that they are quite, and hold very good on wet road. Naah, totally BS. I floated like speed boat. I heard lot of bad reviews about the tires i have now, GY Wrangler RT/S on TireRack and Discount Tires(where i purchased these from), "they do hydroplaning", " turning is out of control", "will never by GY again", but believe it or not, I really love these tires. They hold good in Houston's crazy rains, turn very good, and very quite so far(>5000 MILES). What happens later, we will see.

So, do read reviews, but only for and idea, don't base your judgment only on reviews. TireRack comparison is very helpful.

Tire Rack does a fine job in my mind of taking their role seriously, that being knowing that people are riding on the recommendations and the safety of their families is implicit. The site is cogent, well researched and informative. Are there flaws? I would assume so. Do other sites do a better job? Most likely. Is Consumer's Reports one of them? Not in my opinion.

Point of fact, if you are addressing me in general, I did not slight you because I disagreed with your viewpoints or your opinion about tire rack. In fact I have found your posts entertaining and informative. I took exception due to your characterization of people who added their views on tire rack that the only reason thousands of men and women rated one tire superior is that they wanted to justify their purchase. I am confident that those individuals care just as much about their cars and families as posters on this board do, and , as such your post was unfair and childish in my viewpoint. Let me guess...you're one of TireRack's premier consumer reviewers. I post my reviews on there once in a while when i go to a different tire...so, my comments apply to my "reviews" as well. Don't take it too personal.

I don't think anyone in this thread criticize TireRack as a whole. Hell, they are one of our forum sponsors! It's a great website and their tire comparisons are excellent to read. But, what myself and others in this thread have pointed out to you is that the CONSUMER REVIEW section is unreliable and needs to be taken with a grain (or two) of salt. Why is that so hard for you swallow?? Did we hurt your pride that much?? Holy shit, Alaskaman! Childish? Well, your girly sensitivity is indeed astounding!
