Tires!

Hi Guys - I'm running Michelin stock size 265/65-R17, fantastic tires, but they are now 10 years old. The big shops won't even fix them due to code/regulations, etc. I found a small shop that pulled/patched a nail.

With replacements, what are the cons of moving bigger to 265/70-R17's...? I'm looking at A/T's in Goodyear, Goodrich or Falken. From what I've read here and elsewhere, there is very little chance of rubbing.

Thoughts? Any insight appreciated, thanks!

P.S. I'm in the Midwest, this is my DD, and I drive in everything.

The only con I can think of is possibly lower mpg. Of course there's some variables such as tread pattern and tire weight. Stick with a light, mild tread AT and you may not see any difference. I would recommend to buy 5 so the spare matches.

I like the Toyo AT3, BFG KO2 and have lately been looking at the Firestone XT.

Thanks, was thinking mileage, noise and ride. Just looked at this from Michelin, LTX A/T 2, in stock size. The marketing suggests something pretty close to your recommendation:

The Michelins AT2 is another good choice for a daily driver with some light trail use. Those tires came stock on my Tundra and other than undersized (in my opinion) they were good tires. Unfortunately, a lot of tires are on backorder but with some shopping around, you may get lucky.

Same here. I wish they were more aggressive but then they become like some of the other tires out there, loud, heavy, fast wear, etc. With today's gas prices, I've considered them lately for the tundra, just in a little taller size.
 
Possible rubbing and worse MPG with larger tires. I second the suggestion to get 5. You can do a 5 tire rotation too and get some more miles out of the set. I really like my Cooper AT3 4S in one size bigger than stock. If you go to a more aggressive tread pattern you may notice a difference in road noise also.

I had my LTX2, the second set, for about a year and they started to dry rot, cracking all around the treads and sidewalls. Michelin gave me the middle finger on warranty for it.

Coincidentally, I bought said set of LTX2's to replace the previous Michelin LTX set which had dry rotted and cracked terribly. I figured it was a one-off and they were around 6 years old at the time, kinda seemed okay in the Alberta sun to have some cracking... and regardless, these LTX2's are new, everyone's raving about them, Michelin makes great tires.

Anyway, Michelin telling me to go find salt to pound really pissed me off when I asked about a warranty claim for the dry rot. Kal-Tire submitted a warranty claim request and it was denied. So you couldn't pay me to run their shitty tires on my rig. I'd rather have retreads. I had to drive around on tires that looked 30 years old for 5 years to justify replacing them, for the $2000 bill. So Michelin can get f*cked.

I don't think they're worth the money, they just spend more on advertising.

Same experiance and no more Michelin's for me

I had always had good luck with Michelin tires, but the last 2 sets on my 2003 Limited have developed cracks. I currently have X Radial LT2's that are cracking on the sidewalls and tread to the point that inner material is protruding through. I don't drive the 4runner often now, and definitely won't be driving it again until they are replaced. This started with about 5 years on the tires and has continued to worsen. Michelin wasn't interested in hearing from me, other than to suggest that I get a new set of Michelin tires.
In contrast, I have Bridgestone Revo II's of the same age on my truck and not a sign of cracking or dry rot on them. The truck has spent its life parked outside. The 4runner is always garaged.
I had an LS430 with Michelin Pilot Sports and though there was no cracking, they were actually louder than the 4runner tires.
My wife's GX460 came with Michelin Latitudes, and you can bet I'll be keeping a close eye on them.
 
Went with 265/70/17 Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus - great tire IMO and no rubbing at all - riding on TRD rims. I was considering other brands but figured this was the best set-up for street, highway and occasional terrain - so far these tires proved to be pretty good on wet surfaces, snow and in a bit of mud as well. Car recommend!
 
Very interesting. The Michelins on the vehicle right now are 10 years old, still decent tread left, and some cracking on the sidewalls that you have to be looking for to find.
 
I've found Cooper AT3's to be excellent on-road, off-road and in snow. I opted for the 265/70/17 C-load version for when we're loaded up with camping equipment and additional sidewall protection off-road. I was just starting to research replacing them as they're now 7 yrs old w/ ~65k miles, still great tread depth though, and it's looking like I will go with these same tires again.
 
You will find some great and decent tires but this
Falken Wildpeak AT3W will beat them. great on\road and off\road. best tires Ive own. coming off a set of discovery AT3
 
Well, I dragged my feet and have another tire losing air. I looked at it and with a big driving trip with loved ones coming up, and inspection showing cracking everywhere, "with my luck", yada, yada...

Discount Tire is installing some Defenders right now...buy once cry once seems persuasive.
