TMPS and New Shoes

okay. admittedly bass ackwards. When the new Pirelli tires were installed they did not mention any thing about the TMPS. Would the installer at America's Tires make any adjustments on the TMPS? How does that system work?

No adjustments to be made. Simply dismount the old tire, remount the new tire, and then balance.

The tire pressure monitor is part of the valve stem. It's best to make sure that the guys at the tire place are aware of that fact so that they don't mangle the valve stems.

The monitors report air pressure readings back to a computer - it doesn't know anything about the tire itself, the size, etc. The computer also doesn't keep track of which sensor is on which wheel, so it doesn't matter where the wheels are re-installed. The only time you need to let the computer know something happened is if you replaced one of the sensors - they have unique ID's which the computer tracks.

Know that the TPMS is checking all 5 wheels - the 4 on the ground plus the spare. The light will come on steady if any one of the 5 gets below 27 PSI. If there is a problem with the system (like a broken or missing sensor), the light will keep flashing.

The light doesn't flash if a sensor is missing. I drove around without my spare wheel (it was at the shop getting a new tire mounted) and the light never even came on.

I thought something must be wrong, so when I got my spare back from the shop, I let some air out of it and sure enought the light came on.

Give us a full report on those tires (and maybe a pic), they were rated excellent!

Well, mine came on when the tire was punctured and stayed on after I dropped the bad tire off at the shop. It was on until I picked up the repaired tire. So maybe it's detecting transitions, but not missing sending units?

After having two punctures in three days I got to see the little light on the dash a lot and it was always correct.

so far the tires are great. waiting for the 1st rain/snow. it's kinda like putting a racing tire on the 4Runner. tracks like a cat and adds road feel. so far so good. see the thread the Beast Likes Italian Shoes for a pic....waiting for RAIN!!

I was charged $6 per tire for the (optional) "TPMS rebuild kit" at America's Tire -- basically a new valve stem (?) and new washers as far as I can tell. Thought it would be worth it and TPMS still works -- I know because I had a leaky valve and the warning light came on. Had to go back yesterday to have them fix it. PITA. I assumed the valve stem is separate from the sending unit. Looks like it from the diagrams I've seen.

Anyway, they seemed to understand how TPMS worked and how to deal with it... even had a big poster in the waiting room explaining it.

BTW, here's my preliminary take on the Scorpion ATRs compared to my old (40K miles) Dunlops:

1. They are marginally noisier than the Dunlops, but the change is barely noticeable and overall they're amazingly quiet for an AT tire.
2. There's slightly less body roll around corners, which suggests the sidewalls are stiffer than the Dunlops.
3. More bumps are picked up from the road (no surprise for a stiffer tire) but overall there is more "damping" of rough road surfaces. In other words bumps that are picked up are less jarring. Again, not a great surprise considering the Dunlops were old and the compound had probably hardened over the years.
4. Grip seems fine but I haven't really tested them. No rain here and I've only put 100 miles on them.
5. Tracking is improved from the Dunlops. There's less steering wander and steering feel has improved.
6. No problems with balancing. In fact, less weight was needed to balance the tires, overall, compared to my Dunlops and the steering is smooth as can be.
