To all who have 33's or bigger?

Only curious but i have not changed gear ratios or anything and i am new to the off road world but how do i make my speed and odometer accurate? And if i were to change gear ratios what would you guys recommend with 33 12.50's. I like the way it drives but i just need suggestions i guess.

You just need to get your speedometer calibrated, call around and see who can do it. If you actually want to regear, I'd go for some 4.56's with those tires. I still have not regeared with my 35's and wish I had some 4.88's.

really a re-gear depends on which gearing you got from the factory, I know alot of our T4R's came w/ 3.88's or 4.10 rears

Pretty sure I'm 3.88

i work at a Ford dealership so access to do it is easy i just gotta figure out how to change it first.

If you have a 3rd gen then I've never heard of a 3rd gen coming from the factory with 3.88's. You didn't mention if you have an auto tranny or manual either. Personally, for me with the 5-speed and having run both 4.10's and 4.88's, I'd go with the 4.88's if your planning on running 33's. IMHO.

I know they have 3.90s along with 4.10s, 4.30 mainly found in the 3rd gens with the factory elocker. I have never heard of someone saying that they had 4.30 and didnt have the elocker. There are also 4.56s. Toyota also had produced 4.88 carrier for the 2nd gen which has been known to be a very very stout 3rd member. Never heard of anyone making a 3.88 gear ratio.

3.88/3.90 gears are only in 2wd runners, and I'm not sure about 3rd gens, but I know the 2nd gens had 3.90 if they were 2wd.

Running 285/75-16's the speedo is surprisingly close in my '97 runner with 4:10's.
The inaccuracy grows as speed increases, but in town according to those road-side solar powered "your speed is" @ 45mph it's right on.
IIRC, using a cell GPS app, at highway speed it's less than 5mph off.

Moving up to 33"s your not gonna feel alot of power loss. Mine still has plenty of umph. In order to get your speedometer calibrated again, your gonna have to buy a speedo calibrator such as yellowbox or you can swap out your sensor gear in your transmission, also very easy and costs about $20.

The speed/odometer functionality I believe depends on whether or not your 4runner has ABS or not... does it?

I have a auto tranny and no e-locker. To be honest i have not looked to see what gear ratio i have so i have no clue what it is yet. I just need to put it back on the lift next week and I'll turn and count.

Almost nobody recalibrates their speedo/odo. Don't worry about it. Just run the tire and gear you want and forget about it.

Only reason I could see doing it is if you're reading faster than you're actually moving... No need for extra miles

If its a easy fix then i see no reason not to change it. I read faster the faster i go. So 25 mph is about normal, 45 is 48, 55 is 60, and 70 is 78. According to the GPS on my phone.
